Recreational marijuana sales are expected to begin in Virginia next summer, and Bedford County leaders are already working to determine what that could mean for businesses in the county.

Under a new state law, regulated recreational cannabis sales are set to begin July 1, 2027. Local governments will not be able to ban recreational marijuana businesses outright, but they will have some control over where those businesses can operate through local zoning rules.

Bedford County is now beginning that process.
