Chris La Tray is a Métis storyteller, a descendant of the Pembina Band of the
mighty Red River of the North, an enrolled member of the Little Shell Tribe
of Chippewa Indians, and the 2023–2024 Montana Poet Laureate. He is the
author of One-Sentence Journal: Short Poems and Essays from the World at Large (Riverfeet Press, 2018) and Becoming Little Shell (Milkweed Editions, 2024).
In this presentation, La Tray embarks on a deeply personal and revealing journey into his family’s past and his Chippewa heritage. Throughout his journey, La Tray discovered a larger story of the complicated history of Indigenous communities—and the devastating effects of colonialism that continue to ripple through surviving generations.
