One thing I keep learning:
Goals are helpful.
But identity is what keeps you moving after the hype wears off.
It is easy to say:
“I want to build a business.”
“I want to get in shape.”
“I want to become more disciplined.”
“I want to be a better leader.”
But the better question is:
Who do I need to become to make that outcome normal?
Not impressive once.
Normal.
Because the real work is not only hitting the goal.
It is becoming the kind of person who consistently does the things that make the goal possible.
How does that person think?
What do they do when they are tired?
How do they communicate?
How do they handle setbacks?
How do they treat people when they are under pressure?
What do they refuse to compromise on?
I am still learning this too.
But the more I noodle about identity, the more I realize that most meaningful goals require more than a better plan.
They require becoming a different version of yourself.
