In this video, Professor Darlene Miller introduces the Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy and International Affairs at the Thabo Mbeki School.
Prof Miller explains that the complex challenges facing South Africa, the African continent and the world require more than quick fixes. They require deep, original and rigorous research that generates new knowledge, new insights and meaningful responses to public policy and international affairs challenges.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy and International Affairs is the highest academic qualification offered by the School. It is designed to prepare scholars to make a significant and original contribution at the frontiers of public policy, international affairs and related fields.
The programme advances public-sector education and responds to a dynamic global environment. It is grounded in the vision articulated by the Chancellor, His Excellency Thabo Mbeki, that students must become both thinkers and doers: critical minds committed to building a just and stable society.
As a PhD candidate, the primary focus is the production of a substantial thesis that represents an original contribution to knowledge. Candidates are supported through advanced research methodology coursework, while the programme’s transdisciplinary approach encourages them to move beyond traditional academic silos and develop innovative research initiatives that reflect today’s interwoven realities.
Applicants who hold a relevant master’s degree and are ready to undertake advanced academic research are encouraged to apply.
