After years of close collaboration, we were pleased to assist Cornwall Wildlife Trust with Cornwall’s first licensed wild beaver release yesterday. Four beaver pairs have been released within the Par and Fowey river catchment after three years of planning and local consultation. These beavers will help to restore healthy waterways, improve biodiversity, and increase climate resilience in Cornwall.
Our Restoration team have worked hard to “matchmake” and translocate these beavers from other sites across Britain to start moving the species from isolated pockets towards healthy, connected populations.
This release is a momentous step for beaver restoration, both in Cornwall and nationally. We hope this marks the beginning of restoring the species at the scale needed in the wild to halt species decline, increase wildlife, and ultimately tackle the biodiversity crisis, in line with the government’s legally binding commitments.
