Three dreamy Colorado tornadoes touch down near the town of Brush on May 22nd, 2021.
After driving more then 2000 miles through 11 different states to arrive in Colorado. I had high hopes for my first serious storm chasing trip. On May 22nd near the town of Brush, the great plains were about to make my wildest dreams come true.
After spending some time forecasting, I ultimately decided to target the area south of interstate 76 near Brush Colorado and started to make my way down that direction.
What I didn’t expect was for the storm to fire much earlier then the models were suggesting. Once the storms did fire, picking the right storm was a no brainer but what started as a simple repositioning quickly turned into a race against time.
Flying down the dirt roads I was able to gain visual on the storm.
And from there it didn’t take long for something interesting to start happening.
In the time it took me to get my camera on a tripod, a beautiful rope tornado twisted to the ground.
After coming to terms with what I had just seen, I got my head back in the game and sought to get much closer to the storm before It cycled again.
Before I knew it, another brief weak Tornado started kicking up dust under the base.
As the Mesocyclone started to pass overhead, the rising motion under the wall cloud was difficult to believe. I knew a Tornado was likely to form soon so I set up my cameras and waited.
Once this final Tornado had dissipated the storm began to choke on its own outflow along with a thick fog killing off most of the instability. This caused the storm to rapidly lose strength and it became obvious I would need to target a different storm. I ultimately decided to punch south towards another storm that had also produced tornadoes.
Once I arrived, I was greeted by a gnarly HP beast.
Although the base was somewhat visible, it was extremely difficult to determine if anything was going on underneath.
After teasing me with some ground scrapping scud under a rotating base, the storm quickly began to go completely outflow dominant and started to collapse.
Along the leading edge of the gust front, a large gustnado developed.
And with that, the day was over and I thought to myself, there’s no way I’m gonna be able to top that.
