Learn how to use rootless chord voicings on guitar to create colorful, sophisticated jazz chords with a more piano-like sound.
In this jazz guitar lesson, I’ll show you some of my favorite Drop 2 rootless voicings and demonstrate how to apply them to a jazz standard using Autumn Leaves.
By removing the root, we free up space in the chord for extensions and color tones while creating compact voicings that work especially well for jazz guitar comping.
We’ll look at rootless voicings for:
🎸 Major 7 chords
🎸 Minor 7 chords
🎸 Minor 7♭5 chords
🎸 Altered dominant chords
Rather than simply memorizing a collection of chord shapes, I’ll show you how these voicings connect through a chord progression and how you can use voice leading to move smoothly from one chord to the next.
We’ll then take these concepts and apply them to Autumn Leaves, giving you a practical example of how rootless Drop 2 voicings can be used in a real musical situation.
