I have christened this shape the Beau Ball (2400 Zen Magnets) in honor of my beloved Boxer, Beau, who passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011. This is really a dodecahedron construction. I used a triangular subunit (three 9-ball circles in an offset stack). This is the same subunit used in the construction of wheels. I put five of the triangular subunits together to form a pentagonal star. I make twelve of the pentagonal stars to make the majority of the Beau Ball. There are holes between the pentagonal stars. I use the same triangular subunit to fill in those holes. I use a 2-layer pentagon to fill in the hole in the center of the pentagonal stars.
Variation of the Beau Ball. Same subunits, but inverted pentagonal star:
