A: The portal is caused by a chunk border bug when a 1 in 10^12 chance fully lit end portal appears on a chunk border. Since each chunk determines the amount of eyes separately, the portal is only half-lit.

A: Since beds explode in the nether and end, you can use this to your advantage. By timing the beds at the head (this is easier with hitboxes on, on Java Edition to enable hitboxes you press F3 and B at the same time) while it is perching, you can deal huge amounts of damage to the dragon.
