The sixth edition of the Berlin Climate and Security Conference (BCSC) explored how to secure a climate for peace. The conference examined why climate must be integrated into peacemaking. Through taking stock of best practice examples, it advanced concrete climate security approaches and initiatives.

Hosted by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and Norwegian Capacity to International Operations (NORCAP)

In recent years, UN peace operations have begun including climate change considerations in their mandates. The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) now features a dedicated Climate, Peace, and Security Unit, marking a first in UN peacekeeping. This session focused on climate security risks in South Sudan and how UNMISS operationalizes its mandate, sharing field experiences, challenges, and opportunities to further integrate climate considerations into peace operations. NORCAP supports the deployment of climate security experts within UNMISS and other UN operations.

Speakers:
• Lucas Destrijcker, Climate Change and Security Expert, United Nations Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS)
• Mirjam Sørli, Manager, UN Reform and Peacebuilding, NORCAP, part of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC)

The production of this video is supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.
