To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Victory in Europe, the annual May Day holiday in the UK was moved from the first Monday of the month (in 1995 that was May 1) to the second (May 8) as it was 50 years to the day that the war in Europe ended with VE Day. BBC1 ran a special night of programmes to mark the anniversary, including the commemorative episode of EastEnders, The Queen lighting the first beacon in a nationwide chain and a concert featuring some of the stars of the day as the stars of 1945.
