Adam Henson, farmer and co-presenter of BBC's Countryfile programme, dropped into the 'From Field to Fork' exhibition at the Three Counties Show to talk food and agriculture issues with Dr Tristan MacLean, the Inspiring Young Scientists Co-ordinator for BBSRC (the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council). The two discussed people's connection to their food, and how their attitudes may differ across generations.
95,000 people attended the three-day show, and Henson was just one of many hundreds of people who stopped off at the exhibition to engage with food and farming issues via interactive exhibits, games and activities.
The 'From Field to Fork' exhibition is a public engagement activity of the UK's Global Food Security (GFS) programme, which is a multi-agency programme that brings together the UK's major funders of food and farming-related research, including BBSRC, to coordinate their efforts. 'From Field to Fork' highlights the challenges of providing the world's growing population with a sustainable, secure supply of good quality food. The exhibition has been designed to spark people's interest and help to highlight and inform visitors whilst encouraging them to discuss the issues involved. There are a variety of materials on display including interactive elements, tablet computer activities and activity sheets.
The exhibition regularly tours the UK and features a broad range of research funded by GFS partners, from molecular plant biology and epidemiology to consumer behavior and social science.
