I really didn't explain myself very well as I was introducing my reading plans (I thought I'd be able to think of the right thing to say on the spot but the words didn't come). Like many people I have been horrified by the news this week regarding the death of George Floyd in the USA and the continuing maltreatment of protesters, and I have appreciated the many videos I have seen furthering that debate. As a young white woman in the UK with a very limited knowledge of the history of racial tension in the US (even in the UK) I don't feel like I can say anything of value other than that I support those who are fighting for the equality of rights and opportunities that they deserve. Within UK politics, my votes and my voice have always gone and will always go to supporting those who aim to improve that. Making a video more focused on that would, I think, have no concrete benefit and would seem more to be jumping on the bandwagon, asking for praise. By planning a reading project for this month I will keep issues of racial justice at the forefront of my mind for longer, if the news about this fades as it so often has done in the past, and I will also add to my understanding of different cultural perspectives for the future. I've selected from books that I was already intending to read but hadn't prioritised, a number of which specifically focus on narratives of discrimination. I hope that all makes sense.
