BattleTech Warships: The Riga Class Frigate
What do you get when you cross a destroyer with a cruiser?
Apparently — a frigate. And a surprisingly good one.
The Riga-class frigate, commissioned in 2440, was the Terran Hegemony’s answer to a growing tactical gap — a warship fast enough to operate independently, yet powerful enough to fight alongside heavy cruisers. Developed by Boeing Interstellar, the Riga combined high fuel efficiency, formidable energy weapons, and armor worthy of a battlecruiser.
Armed with naval PPCs, lasers, and autocannons, the Riga was a balanced vessel — equally capable in fleet engagements and long-range patrols. With two DropShip collars, three bays, and cargo capacity exceeding 124,000 tons, it was perfectly suited for extended deployments.
Rigas often escorted Monsoon- and Aegis-class WarShips during the Reunification War, where they proved exceptionally resilient and adaptable. Though retired in 2735, the design lived on: the Riga II variant served under the Star League Defense Force and later among the Clans as the York-class carrier. Even the Word of Blake resurrected two examples during the Jihad, both ultimately destroyed by 3073.
