BattleTech Warships: The Cruiser Class Missile Cruiser
🚀 In the early days of BattleTech’s WarShip history, few designs were as unusual—or as influential—as the Cruiser-class. Serving under Director-General James McKenna, these squat, missile-heavy warships spearheaded the Terran Hegemony’s “persuasion campaigns”, helping to bring independent worlds back into the fold.
First deployed in 2325, the Cruiser-class represented one of the earliest generations of Terran Hegemony WarShips, introduced alongside the Black Lion-class battlecruiser and the massive Dreadnought-class battleship. Though flawed in many ways, the Cruiser was often the first sign that a world was about to face Hegemony rule. Positioned at jump points and reinforced by aerospace fighters, they secured the skies for Hegemony ground forces.

Armed with naval autocannons and Barracuda & White Shark missile launchers
500,000 tons displacement, smaller but heavily armed for its size

Sold to the Great Houses after retirement—still in Draconis Combine service as late as 2765
Strategically, the Cruiser-class was best used as a long-range gunboat. Its missile firepower rivaled even later designs like the Avalon-class cruiser, though limited armor and awkward mass distribution made it vulnerable in prolonged combat. Despite its shortcomings, the Cruiser helped shape early Terran Hegemony naval doctrine and played a central role in McKenna’s expansion campaigns.
