BattleTech Review: "By Blood Betrayed" by Blaine Lee Pardoe and Mel Odom
There is a lot of animosity towards the Periphery. The violent crusade of Ian Cameron called “Reunification War” is well known. Kerensky was suppressing the Periphery when the Amaris Coup happened. Even the kind and wise Prophet Jerome Blake had his reservations. And many other people from the Inner Sphere, leaders and commoners alike, viewed the Periphery with hatred and disgust.

“By Blood Betrayed” by Blaine Lee Pardoe and Mel Odom
Harley Rassor is a simple farm boy in a complex techno-universe—more than happy to work the land of planet Slewis with his father. His restless older brother left to join the elite merc corps, Able's Aces... and paid with his life. Now, Harley's father wants him to join the fight—and learn what happened to his brother.
What he learns is that the Aces are in turmoil. His instructor—tough-as-nails Lieutenant Livia Hawke—also happens to be his brother's ex-lover. Rumors of suspected payoffs and setups are commonplace. And the entire unit is in danger of being disbanded.
Then pirates launch a devastating raid on the Rim Collection's resources, sparking an all-out fight that will put the Aces in the thick of battle—and reveal to Harley that there are worse things in war than death....

- Only 223 pages on my reader, yet still stretched and patted
- Fist 10 chapter are overblown skirmish and unpleasant revenge murder
- The reason why the brother of a fallen soldier can join against regulations could be explained in two paragraphs; …it is spread to two chapters.
- Harley Rassor is, of course, the “bestes eva” and not only a master marksman, an hand-to-hand expert, but also has a natural feel for BattleMechs.
- The complete story is resolved by methodes and plans of Major Jerry Able, Rassor is almost useless.
- Avert your gaze: Sarna was hilariously passive-aggressive and petty. The Plot Summery spoils the twist.
- Warning: not the usual style of BLP
- Can not be recommended
