Tex is back in the commander's chair, but this time we’re throwing away the safety rails of the base game and doing things the Federated Suns way. That's right, we are flying the banner of House Davion, which means two things: a lot of unprompted shouting about "freedom," and an absolute, legally binding obsession with autocannons. If a weapon doesn't shake the fillings out of your mechwarrior's teeth when it fires, the First Prince doesn't want it on the field.
But we aren't playing vanilla. We are diving headfirst into the glorious, beautiful, and deeply cruel world of the Battletech Advanced mod.
What is Battletech Advanced (BTA)?
For the uninitiated, Battletech Advanced (specifically BTA 3062) is a massive, community-driven total overhaul for the 2018 HBS Battletech PC game. If the original vanilla game was a fun, polite introduction to the Inner Sphere, BTA is the full, unfiltered tabletop experience dragged kicking and screaming into digital reality. It pushes the timeline forward to the year 3062, introducing Clan tech, a sprawling Inner Sphere map, and a level of tactical depth that will make your inner accountant weep tears of joy—or terror.
Here is what BTA brings to the battlefield:
- Bigger Drops: Throw out that old four-mech restriction. BTA lets you upgrade your Argo drop slots to field up to 16 units simultaneously—allowing you to mix full mech lances, armored combat vehicles, and mechanized Battle Armor squads.
- True Tabletop Customization: The mechbay is completely unlocked. You can swap engines, install XL variants, strip down Endo-Steel skeletons, slap on Ferro-Fibrous armor, and fine-tune every single critical slot exactly how the tabletop rules intended.
- Overhauled Combat Mechanics: Evasion doesn't just magically disappear when an enemy misses a shot anymore. Light and medium mechs are actually viable as high-speed, hard-to-hit harassers... right up until an assault mech puts its foot through their center torso.
- Advanced Weaponry & Munitions: From Rotary Autocannons (RACs) and LB-X cluster rounds to Area-of-Effect artillery and acid-coated payloads, you have an entire catalog of destruction. Better yet, you can swap ammo types (like Inferno or Precision rounds) mid-mission.
- Smarter Enemy AI & Grittier Rules: The enemy AI actually knows how to use sensor locks, flank your rear armor, and focus down weak targets. Furthermore, pilot injuries are highly specific now. A concussion ruins their aim, a broken rib slows them down, and a compound fracture means they are actively bleeding out in the cockpit.
