In August 1942 there can’t have been many Americans who could have found the small jungle outpost of Guadalcanal on the map, but six months later there were few who couldn’t, after the loss of life on the island as the Americans fought their way back across the Pacific. It was to be a bloody last push that would finally avenge the destruction of the US fleet in Pearl Harbor. The successful invasion of Guadalcanal by Marines under General Alexander Vandegrift captured the national imagination, and the defeat of the Japanese there marked a turning point as the Second World War started to draw to a close.
