By January 1995, Russia's military campaign to restore federal authority over the breakaway republic of Chechnya was in its second month. Despite overwhelming Russian firepower and widespread destruction, Chechen fighters continued to contest control of the capital, Grozny. As the battle intensified and the war's humanitarian toll mounted, both sides focused on the symbolic and strategic prize of Grozny's Presidential Palace. This is the second in a series of videos covering the First Chechen War, as it was reported and understood at the time.
