When it first came out every movie critic out there has made their feelings for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice heard. But there’s one issue that I haven’t seen talked about anywhere, and I feel it’s one of the most fundamental problems with the film: Batman and Superman are strangers.
The whole “Batman vs Superman” scenario is so powerful in the comics and graphic novels because the two have a history of working together for years. When the two of them fight in The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel, there's this beautiful melancholy sadness as each other acknowledges they have to battle even though they don't want to.
It's conflicting because they love each other. In the movie, they meet under the context of hating one another and they fight each other as enemies, not as conflicted best friends, so the clashing of the two most famous superheroes ever is nowhere near as weighty.
I think the most disappointing part is now that they've done it once in the cinematic universe, anything beyond this point will be them working together, because they already played the 'civil war' card too early, which I think is simply an inferior way to tell what can be a pretty moving story of friendship and justice.
