The Batman film series has been a mainstay of popular cinema for many decades now. Ever since Tim Burton’s 1989 blockbuster, audiences have been continuously enthralled by the Dark Knight’s adventures, whether it be Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck or someone else underneath the cowl. Batman has always been a widely popular character in film, and that is partly what makes it so hard to believe the slump the character found himself in during the late 1990’s. The series of films started by Burton in 1989 had ran itself into the ground, and by the release of 1997’s Batman & Robin, Warner Bros were unsure what the future of the Caped Crusader was on the big screen (or if he even had one). In the years that followed, the studio attempted a number of different ways to bring back the Batman series (ranging from the dark, Taxi Driver-like take by Darren Aronofsky, to a Batman/Superman team-up movie that almost saw Josh Hartnett become the Man of Steel), but in this video, I want to look at the immediate aftermath of Batman & Robin’s critical and commercial failure, the impact it had on the Batman film series, and the two competing screenplays which promised to bring the Dark Knight back to his glory days: Batman: Unchained (also commonly called Batman: Triumphant) and Batman: DarKnight.

There are few moments as memorable, iconic or culturally significant as the closing pages of November 1992’s Superman #75, where after a climactic battle against the hulking monster, Doomsday, Superman (the most famous and beloved superhero of all time) succumbed to his wounds, and died. In both the comic book world and in our world, a silence fell - the whole planet collectively mourned. The Death of Superman story from DC Comics is one of the most famous and instantly recognisable events in all of comic book history, I challenge you to find someone who hasn’t at least heard of the time Superman was killed. This story was a tremendous success for DC, revitalising the company’s sales at a time when Marvel were dominating the industry. But despite this, it could be said that (in the long-term) the Death of Superman actually set the precedent for a form of storytelling that would negatively impact comics in the late 1990’s. Either way, the story’s legacy and impact is far-reaching, and stands today as one of the most iconic moments in the history of modern fiction. So, in this two-part video series, I want to analyse how such a story came to fruition, exploring the state of DC Comics in the early 1990’s, and just how things got to a point where DC had to allow their greatest hero to die, just so the company could survive.
