"Riddle me this, Riddle me that. How many times have YOU seen the Big, Black, Bat?!" ;D A 1995 TV spot for Batman Forever, starring Val Kilmer (RIP), Nicole Kidman, Jim Carrey, Tommy Lee Jones, and directed by Joel Schumacher (RIP). A lot of people talk about this movie (and that other one) as a backlash to the bit-too-scary Burton Batmans. But I think it's also important to remember that Schumacher grew up with the very colorful, campy Batman comics of the 1940s. So there was certainly precedent for his vision. It's just that younger fans had gotten used to the more gothic atmosphere of Burton and also Batman: The Animated Series. Still, let's not forget that Batman Forever was indeed a hit, owing a great deal to the casting of Jim Carrey as The Riddler, fresh off his success in Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber (all in the same year!). Speaking of riddles, what do Batman Forever and the original Star Trek have in common? The answer of course is that they both feature actors who portrayed The Riddler, as you can see in the WPIX Star Trek marathon promo I've also included here. Specifically the episode "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield," starring the 1960s Riddler, Frank Gorshin! Long live the Bat Family! :)
