Basura means “trash”. This “hombre basura” appears to be grateful for his job and does it with a smile. Here in Mexico we hang our trash on high hooks first thing in the morning in an effort to prevent street dogs from ripping open the plastic trash bags and spilling garbage all over the sidewalks.
Ringing the bell and yelling “basura!”, alerts everyone to get their trash out for pickup.
Surprisingly, our streets in Chapala are clean.
The sewage system is old, and we are advised to throw soiled tissue in the trash instead of flushing. That makes it necessary to empty our bathroom receptacles daily. It’s nice a to know that we can depend on these hardworking trash men to do their jobs well.
