Green Beret Ryan almost lost his leg when he stepped on an IED. They wanted to amputate, but one doctor told him he might be able to save it and that Ryan would be the first person to get that treatment. 2 years and 26 surgeries later, Ryan got back into action.

As a professional fighter, one of his favorite tactics was the liver shot (both punch and kick), and he popularized its use in MMA.
