A third rail insulator blew up today on the M1 track at Civic Center station today, closing the station for about a couple hours. Here is the damage seen afterwards, during the PM commute. Note the remains of an insulator, alongside the completely gone section of fiberglass third rail coverboard and station ATO antennae, alongside what appears to be some damage to the third rail.

Today is the third straight business day of major mainline delays – a very though month for BART and its commuters with everything from trespassing, tampering with fiber optic lines, interlocking problems, and now insulator problems.
