Barony Colliery was the last deep mine colliery to close in Ayrshire in 1989. With less than a century of use . The colliery was at is most productive I the mid 1950’s shortly after nationalisation.. and employed many hundreds of people from the local areas . Today the only thing to survive is the A Frame pit head gear that served as the main entrance other number 3 shaft taking workers a the pit face and bringing up hundreds of tonnes of coal a week . Now sadly like the rest of Britain deep coal mines are now a thing of the past. Only monuments like this one remain.
