This is one of several barn owls that had been rescued by two UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine faculty, Dr. Monica Aleman and Dr. John Madigan. They noticed that their neighbor's barn was under construction, and the construction had disrupted the nesting Barn Owls, which were in a cavity near the ceiling. Drs. Aleman and Madigan swooped in to save the babies and brought them to the California Raptor Center.
After a few more weeks of growing up, the Barn Owl quartet (plus one honorary, unrelated "sibling") was ready to go home. CRC staff joined Dr. Aleman and Dr. Madigan near their home outside of Woodland for the release. As she released the birds, Dr. Aleman got to watch the owlets she rescued swoop into a nearby orchard to begin their adult lives in the wild.
