Vampire Rain: Is it one of the worst games ever made? Let's find out.

Bargain Bin Splinter Cell with vampires is the best way of describing Vampire Rain. Or Bargain Bin Metal Gear Solid with vampires, but that series had a vampire, or sort of. Vampire Rain does pull more elements from the world of survival horror with its stealth, but the end result is a mess.
Instead of giving the player freedom with stealth options, Vampire Rain funnels you down one specific path for most of its runtime. It has a story and world where it's not sure what it wants to be. It doesn't have a distinct identify - pulling many threads from other series.
Vampire Rain has a reputation of being one of the worst games around. One of the worst for the 360 or PS3, or its timeframe of 2007 and 2008. A case of "it's so bad, it's good". Do I agree with this? Not quite. I did find myself enjoying myself more than I was expecting given the the review scores of Vampire Rain. Many outlets giving the game a score in the 30s.
That said, Vampire Rain is not some overlooked title by any stretch. Those reviews scores are understandable. Especially when you consider this timeframe and the quality of games released on the regular. The "so bad it's good" moments that I was looking forward to? They were few and far between, and I was expecting more of that coming in. Instead, most of these moments are bad, period. Or baffling.
Vampire Rain is also a title from a bygone era. This timeframe of the 7th generation, the 360, ps3, wii era, saw the decline of the mid budget title. What used to be a staple of the gaming market phased out as the cost of development continued to rise.
And while there does seem to be a bit of a resurgence of the mid-budget title these days, it's nowhere near the numbers that we used to see. When studios and publishers still had that mentality of throwing things at the wall and seeing what would stick. And what they threw at the wall here with Vampire Rain is a mess. A game that lacks bite despite sporting fangs.
