Ever wonder what is out there? Like, really wonder what could exist in the ever-flowing vacuum of space and time? Imagine other worlds just like ours, where people argue over the same stupid bullshit, where citizens have their own special set of activities they use to escape from reality - worlds just like ours that I’m too cynical to think would be peaceful, but exist just the same. I think about this so often that it always leads me wonder what the soundtrack might be for the different worlds that could exist. It wouldn’t be the stupid, overproduced Hollywood-type of soundtrack, but rather something more nuanced and layered - extraterrestrial perhaps, but with layered with the subtle feelings of home.
Because I have thought about this so much, I’ve started to create my own playlist that I think might be fitting for such a thing - and Om Unit’s remix of Barclay Crenshaw’s “Hidden Harmonics” is a track that holds a firm spot. What originally started as an instrumental for Crenshaw’s debut album developed into a full blown production replete with vocals and complex basslines. However, what took it one step further was the more than gentle nudge from Bristol’s own drum and bass and jungle producer, Om Unit. Something simple has become a track surprisingly full of emotional depth that carries the listener on a journey, not one with flashy visual effects and too perfect twists and turns, but rather provides something more akin to a fever dream. Deep, dark and dripping with intrigue, Om Unit’s twist on “Hidden Harmonics” feels grounded enough to be real, but discomfited enough to be a passing moment of deja vu.
What’s not to love? The alter ego of famed house music producer Claude VonStroke; Crenshaw’s project has punctured new worlds and helped us discover what might be out there. By opening up that world for others to play in, we’ve discovered a rift in the world he created, one that led us to this musical gem. And who knows, when we are all but a speck after we’ve long destroyed this world, maybe this song will be playing as the denizens of a distant planet dance along.
