Barcelona began as the Roman colony of Barcino, founded in the 1st century BC on Mont Tàber. Four 9-meter Corinthian columns from the Temple of Augustus still stand hidden on Carrer Paradís, visited at 2:25:00. The Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, built in just 54 years (1329–1383) as the "Cathedral of the Sea" by the people of the Ribera district, is considered the purest example of Catalan Gothic architecture. Adjacent to it, the Fossar de les Moreres memorial marks the mass grave of the defenders of Barcelona from the 1714 Siege — the end of the War of the Spanish Succession — and is visited annually on September 11, Catalonia's National Day.
