Barak - Let Go of Your Fear and Let God Work (Hebrews 11:32-34) Sermon by Pastor JD Howell
What does faith look like when you are still afraid? In Hebrews 11, Barak is remembered as a man of faith, yet his story in Judges 4 shows us a man who struggled with very real fear. When God commanded Barak to go into battle, Barak hesitated and wanted Deborah to go with him. Yet despite his fear, he ultimately chose to obey God and move forward. His story reminds us that faith is not the absence of fear. Faith is choosing to follow God even when fear is present.
God had given Barak clear direction and had already promised the victory. Barak simply needed to trust God's Word enough to take the next step. As Pastor JD Howell explains, faith acts on God's promises before it sees God's results. Barak went, fought, pursued, and watched God accomplish exactly what He had promised. We do not have to wait until all our doubts disappear before obeying God. We can trust His Word and move forward by faith.
Hebrews 11:32 says, “And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:” Barak is remembered not because he never experienced fear, but because fear did not get the final word. The same choice stands before us today. Fear may try to keep us from witnessing, serving, giving, being baptized, surrendering, or taking another step of obedience, but faith says that God can be trusted. Faith also encourages faith, and our obedience can strengthen others to follow God too.
