Written May 26, 2026 this is an original piano combo composition in a 5/4 waltz style in B flat major in which I double the piano with accordian. 5/4 can many times be a tricky meter with the measures usually grouped in 3+2 or 2+3 and this song it alternates between the two in the different sections. Balse sa Lima comes from the Filipino Tagalog and simply means Waltz in 5 and parts of this song feels like something that could be used in a Philippine folk dance. The inspiration for the 5/4 waltz came from Tchaikovsky’s famous waltz in his Pathétique Symphony No. 5 which sounds so seamless that you hardly notice that it is in 5 until you count. While this is a bit different from my recent piano jazz combo compositions written this month, I'm going to include them in the set to add a bit of variety and change of pace. The sheet music is written for piano, bass, and guitar, but other instruments could be added as available. Thanks for listening!
