Balmoral, 118 km south west of Sydney, was one of the worst hit villages in the New South Wales Southern Highlands by the 2019/2020 bushfires. The Green Wattle Creek Fire that burnt in the area, hit the village on Wednesday 18th December 2019 & continued to burn into the weekend. The village lost 18 houses, affecting about 10% of the village and 90% of surrounding bushland. Balmoral was hit by two flanks of the fire, from different sides of the village. As the village is reliant on tank water, fire fighters ran out of water at one stage and had to call on a nearby Rural Fire Service crew to assist.
Now in early February 2020, the onset of heavy rain is putting out the remaining pockets of the 278,700 hectare Green Wattle Creek Fire.
This footage was taken at the onset of a period of drought breaking heavy rain in eastern New South Wales, in February 2020.
Between 1 - 15 February, Balmoral has received about 250mm of rain. In early February 2020, the Green Wattle Creek Fire was officially declared extinguished by the Rural Fire Service. Balmoral now faces the task of rebuilding.
