Approximately 24 countries operate and host land or sea-based ballistic missile defense systems, with many more countries in the process of developing or purchasing systems. Ballistic missile defense, while designed to shield countries from missile attacks, is flawed. No system will ever ensure 100% protection of any country’s population from the destruction of a nuclear exchange.
