In the ten years since Sacha Baron Cohen released his critically acclaimed mockumentary Borat, he has released 3 more critically panned comedies.
Maybe it's just me, but I’m completely sick of the comedian's work, and yet my friends and I still quote Borat to this day.
So what did Sacha Baron Cohen do in 2006 that he hasn't been able to replicate since? It's simple. He lost his balance of comedy with cringe.
In his most recent work, it seems like Sacha is going out of his way to shock audiences, often pushing his own envelope in finding the most disgusting outlandish sequences to include in his films.
Borat has gross-out scenes as well, but I guess the difference is that the film was also a hilarious social commentary. Certain scenes in the film are disgusting, but they're nested in between moments of comic gold and real reactions from onlookers.
In my opinion, Borat must have been a fluke for Sacha Baron Cohen, who chose to reinterpret the wrong element of his classic film and persisted to make comedy after comedy which were simply more gross than they were funny.
