At the 2026 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) in London on February 22, 2026, Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were subjected to a racial slur shouted from the audience while they were on stage presenting an award.
While the Sinners co-stars were presenting the Best Visual Effects award, John Davidson—a Tourette syndrome campaigner associated with the film I Swear—involuntarily shouted the N-word. Davidson has Tourette syndrome, which can involve involuntary vocal tics, including coprolalia (obscene or derogatory outbursts). While BAFTA had warned attendees that Davidson was in the room and might produce loud noises, the specific, audible racial slur caused significant distress and controversy. Despite the disruption, Jordan and Lindo continued to present the award, which was praised by BAFTA for their "incredible dignity and professionalism". However, the incident caused immediate outrage on social media, with many condemning the lack of an immediate, stronger response.
BAFTA released a statement taking "full responsibility" for putting the actors in a "very difficult situation" and apologizing "unreservedly" to Jordan and Lindo.
BBC, the broadcaster, which aired the ceremony on a two-hour delay, apologized for not editing out the slur from the broadcast.
John Davidson, in a statement, Davidson expressed that he was "deeply mortified" by his involuntary tics and that they do not reflect his personal beliefs.
Delroy Lindo noted that he and Jordan "did what we had to do," but expressed a desire for more direct communication from BAFTA following the event.
