Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has called for a review of the police response surrounding the murder of Henry Nowak, arguing that questions must be asked about why allegations of racism appeared to take precedence over claims that Nowak had been stabbed.
Speaking in Westminster, Badenoch said she found footage of Nowak's arrest difficult to watch and described meeting with his family, who she said do not want the case used to divide people but instead hope it will help restore trust in policing.
Badenoch argued that officers involved were following guidance which treats hate crimes as a priority and said the contents of that guidance should be examined. She also questioned whether public bodies have become distracted from their core functions when issues of race and identity are involved.
The speech forms part of wider work she says she has been undertaking on equality law, warning that some of her conclusions may prove uncomfortable for some.
However, the judge who presided over the trial of Nowak's killer did not endorse the theory raised by Badenoch during his summing up to the jury.
