Almost 2 million Californians work through staffing agencies, and most of them assume that someone on the other side of that arrangement is responsible if they get hurt on the job. But in many industries, staffing companies in California aren't required to prove compliance before they operate, so who is actually checking? When something does go wrong, the workers, the businesses that hired them, and California taxpayers often end up sharing a cost that was never supposed to be theirs.
In recent years, fraudulent operators have identified the staffing industry as an entry point, using the lack of oversight to undercut legitimate businesses and avoid accountability.
