Jazz’s greatest artists trace the evolution of a composition from conception to performance, and you’re invited on the journey – backstage and on-stage.
Preservation Hall Jazz Band bassist and Creative Director Ben Jaffe takes us through the development of his composition “Keep Your Head Up” from their 2019 album “A Tuba For Cuba.” Originating as a jam with local percussionists during a trip to Santiago de Cuba, the uplifting tune was a highlight of the band’s performance at SFJAZZ with vocalist Eme Alfonso during Summer Sessions in 2019.
ABOUT PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND
“The past and promise of American music” (Rolling Stone), Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a true New Orleans institution that defines the tradition of Crescent City music. They return following their appearance at the 2018 SFJAZZ Gala honoring Chucho Valdés with music from their new album “A Tuba For Cuba” – a recording inspired by the band’s 2015 visit to the island nation that traces the rich musical and cultural connections between New Orleans and Cuba. Guest vocalist Eme Alfonso, who appears on “A Tuba For Cuba,” joins the band for these performances.
Under the younger Jaffe’s direction, the band has remained timelessly relevant, recording and sharing the stage with the likes of Allen Toussaint, the Foo Fighters, Tom Waits, Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), Dr. John, My Morning Jacket, Beck, and others. For their tireless work in performance, promotion, and preservation of New Orleans music and their commitment to education initiatives, we honored Preservation Hall with the Lifetime Achievement Award at SFJAZZ Gala 2018.
