00:00 Introduction - Back in Black Riff
00:18 Technique - Pivot Permutation
00:31 Rhythm - Groups of 3
00:55 Feel it in half-time
01:18 Training wheels off
01:39 Double time for the win!
Transcription:
Had a student the other day who was struggling with this:
[π΅ Back in Black riff π΅]
First of all, watch the technique. If you have ever practiced my Pivot permutations, that's where they pay off: one-two, one -three, one-four (almost). Let's look at the Rhythm for a second. These are mini groups of threes: 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3.
The rhythm det-da, da-da, da-da. What I recommend for you to really feel this rhythm is not so much to break it down in its quarter note components, which is also something you could do, but this one really thrives of being a group of three being moved over a straight groove. Don't touch the metronome - just feel it in half time.
Groups of threes [π΅π΅π΅π΅] and then you take out the "training wheel" [π΅π΅π΅π΅]
Just feel that note that you just played with the training wheel [π΅π΅π΅π΅] ... and without [π΅π΅π΅π΅] Double time [π΅π΅π΅π΅]

Many popular gadgets exist that are supposed to help us strengthen our fingers. What I recommend may surprise you, though.
00:00 Are gadgets good?
00:10 The real problem
00:31 My favorite gadgets
00:46 Finger strengthening exercises
Transcription
So you want to strengthen your fingers. Im sure these grip masters are wonderful for climbing but for guitar and for bass there are better ways.
Our biggest problem is not the lack of strength - our biggest problem is coordination and feeling and finding those small little tendons and muscles that need to operate when we play bass. that in our daily life dont operate.
We are born and we can grip. This is easy for us to do but to move fingers separately - have coordination for each finger - thats hard.
If youre looking for gadgets, I recommend things that support having feeling in the hand - things like these fidget toys. This is a personal favorite of mine. I have no idea where I got this... fi-dil-ing. Its stimulating to touch and move.
Cupping the hand together and finding each individual finger. If youre looking to do finger strengtheners on the bass, here are a few good ones. For example, lets say I want to strengthen my pinky finger, do pull-offs, hammer on... [...continues on full video #A27long]

One minute tapping tip with Ari [ π΅ Ari tapping π΅ ] pull-off... hammer-on [ π΅ Ari continues tapping π΅ ]
Do not move this finger. It stays. Bring in the right hand. Quarter notes [ π΅ π΅ ]
Move the right hand up and down. G mixolydian works well [ π΅ π΅ ]
Eighth notes [ π΅ π΅ ] Variation [ π΅ π΅ ]
Double up the tempo and you get sixteenth notes [ π΅ π΅ ]
Triplets: one and a two and a three and a four and... [ π΅ π΅ ]
In this configuration, the beat is on this note: [ π΅ π΅ ]
But you can also set the beat to this note: [ π΅ π΅ ] or to this one: [ π΅ π΅ ]
Want to try some chords tapping style? Heres a good way in. Gruv Gear fret wrap engaged!
One hand has the root and the tenth. A tenth is a third up the octave. This is major [ π΅ ] and this is minor [ π΅ ]
Good fingers for that are one and four for the major and one and three for the minor, but other possibilities exist. The other hand: fifth and octave, root 5 8 10. You can let them ring - or lift them. And it gets cool when you start coming up with a cool pattern. Thats a good one to get started [ π΅ π΅ ]
Just up and down: one two three four five six seven and then wait... or you can do one two three four five six seven eight and then do down. Get the motion started with the metronome and get comfortable.
You can play them all in order [ π΅ π΅ ] or you can break them up [ π΅ π΅ ] Come up with a cool pattern [ π΅ π΅ ]
Make it speak. Focus on speed when you attack that string! Lower action and thinner strings are helpful.
Chord progressions:
[ π΅ Ari taps out a D chord π΅ ]
[ π΅ Ari taps out a G chord π΅ ]
[ π΅ Ari taps out a C chord π΅ ]
[ π΅ Ari taps out a A chord π΅ ] and repeats
[ π΅ Ari taps out a D minor chord π΅ ]
[ π΅ Ari taps out a G chord π΅ ]
[ π΅ Ari taps out a C chord π΅ ]
[ π΅ Ari taps out an A minor chord π΅ ] and repeats
