The most extroverted of this concerto's solo instruments, the trumpet, sits out for this movement's more introverted tone. An air of sweet melancholy (never too sad) pervades throughout this short piece.
Nevertheless, the movement closes with a "Picardy Third", a term describing the technique of finishing a minor key composition with a major chord at the very end. The effect is sudden but striking, also setting up the scene for the brighter finale that will follow.
