Baccano is a 2007 supernatural anime set in multiple timelines, but primarily in the early 1930s. Despite only being 16 episodes long, the series follows a wide cast of characters, jumping between different points of time and slowly connecting these characters and piecing together the overarching plot. In honor of the setting of this series, we're making three prohibition era cocktails: the Old Fashioned, the Sidecar and the Southside.
Old Fashioned:
- 2oz/60ml Bourbon
- 3 Dashes of Angostura Bitters
- 1 Sugar Cube
Recipe:
1. Add the sugar cube to a mixing glass.
2. Add the Angostura bitters on top of the sugar to soak.
3. Muddle the sugar to a fine paste, then add the bourbon.
4. Add ice to the mixing glass and stir for about 30 seconds.
5. Strain into a double old fashioned glass over fresh ice.
6. Garnish with an orange peel.
Sidecar:
- 2oz/60ml Cognac
- 0.75oz/22.5ml Triple Sec
- 0.75oz/22.5ml Lemon Juice
Recipe:
1. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker.
2. Add ice and shake for 10 seconds.
3. Strain into a chilled coupe.
4. Garnish with a twist of orange.
Southside:
- 2oz/60ml London Dry Gin
- 0.5oz/15ml Simple Syrup
- 1oz/30ml Lemon Juice
- 7 Mint Leaves
Recipe:
1. Add the mint leaves and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
2. Give the mint a light muddle to release some of the oils.
3. Add the rest of the ingredients to the shaker.
4. Add ice and shake for 10 seconds.
5. Strain into a chilled Nick and Nora glass.
6. Garnish with a sprig of mint.
Rich (2:1) Simple Syrup:
- 400g/2 cups White Sugar
- 200g/1 cup Water
Recipe:
1. Add sugar and water to a saucer.
2. Simmer over low heat until the sugar has dissolved (3-5 mins).
3. Take off heat and let sit to cool for a few minutes.
4. Strain into a glass container, seal and store in the fridge. Lasts for about 6 months.
