MATERIALS:
BERNAT BLANKET YARN,(110 YDS) (or 3 strands ww yarn)
Cocoon: 70 yds, Hat 30 yds
8mm knitting needles (US 11)

INSTRUCTIONS: Gauge 2 stitches and 2 rows = 1 sq inch

COCOON ON STRAIGHT NEEDLES: (fits newborn - 3 months)
1. Worked flat, bottom up. (If you are experienced in knitting, circular needles may be used.)
Cast on 20 stitches. CAST ON: youtube.com/watch?v=_iocTxgfLqU&list=PL8JcOsK0nf1L4RVaar-hbVuTc1AVqrutu&index=5
2. Purl across the row (if using the long tail cast on as that results in the first row of knitting).
3. Knit across the row, knitting 2 stitches in every stitch. (40)
4. Purl across the row.
5. Knit across the row, making 2 stitches in every 4th stitch. (50)
6. Work in stockinette stitch (k1row, p1row) for 30 rows.
7. Work in ribbing: (k1p1) for 4 rows, then cast off. Weave yarn ends into the finished work.
With the same yarn and a yarn needle, sew the side seam of the cocoon, and across the bottom.
COCOON WORKED on CIRCULAR NEEDLES:
1. Cast on 20 stitches, place a marker.
2. Knit across the rowl.
3. Knit 2 stitches in each stitch across the row. (40)
4. Knit across the row.
5. Knit across the row making 2 stitches in every 4th stitch. (50)
6. Knit every row for 30 rows.
7. Work in ribbing (k1-p1) for 4 rows. Cast off, weave yarn ends into the finished work.
HAT: Worked flat ON STRAIGHT NEEDLES, bottom up.
Cast on 28 stitches.
Work in ribbing (k1p1) for 3 rows.
Work in stockinette stitch (k1row, p1row) for 8 rows.
Knit 2 stitches together across the row. (13)
Purl across the row.
Knit 2 stitches together across the row, casting off each stitch after it is worked. Leave a long yarn end, thread it into a needle, weave through the last row of stitches, pull to gather and close the top of the hat, secure with a few stitches, sew the back seam of the hat.

EARS:
Cast on 4 stitches,
Knit across the row, making 2 stitches in the 2nd and 3rd stitch. (6)
Purl across the row.
Knit across the next row.
Purl across the row.
Knit 2 stitches together across the row. (3)
Knit all 3 stitches together and cast off, sew the ears to the sides of the hat.
Weave all yarn ends into the finished work.
Sew ears onto the sides of the hat.
FELT PATCH:
Cut a square of felt,
Cut a black heart
Cut a red heart.
Sew through the red heart all around the edge with black thread.
