Capturing the spectacular sights and sounds of the Blues Du Fleuve cultural festival in northern Senegal, an annual event put together by the West African superstar Baaba Maal, The Traveller is a road trip for the senses, an exploration of cross-cultural discovery and the power of music. Directed and filmed by Joao Pedro Moreira, the film includes an intimate and revealing interview with the musician.

Baaba Maal has partnered with charity: water to reissue his critically acclaimed album, The Traveller. All proceeds go towards bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing countries. Download here: lnk.to/BaabaMaal-CharityWaterID
The reissue exclusively features a new 50-minute documentary of his annual Blues Du Fleuve Festival in Senegal as well as a 12-minute short film featuring Baaba performing acoustically and talking about his involvement with the charity.

While the former Prime Minister’s politics divide opinion (to say the least), there is no denying his impact on the business of music in Jamaica. He certainly does not underestimate it himself. In today’s terms Seaga’s business practices would be termed “disruptive”. In his case, of the traditional “blank label” business. This, he suggests, opened the way for local music, and its eventual international success. As he tells Steve Barrow in this 1995 interview, he first approached music with the as an anthropological researcher in the 1950s, recording Jamaican folk music, both secular and religious. A Folkways recording followed, and then his own label, West Indies Records Ltd (WIRL). As an added bonus, you’ll find out the curious connection between “Beard Man Shuffle” and the JBC’s “Teenage Dance Party”. Essential viewing, illustrating the crucial connection between politics and music that, while not unique to the country, is essential to understanding it.

That one of the most colourful and influential producers and sound system operators started his professional career as a police marksman is perhaps less surprising in the context of Jamaican music than it might be elsewhere. Duke Reid certainly had a reputation that preceded him. Not surprising, a rather different side to the man is remembered by his widow in this 1994 interview. Mrs. Lucille (the “Dutchess”) Reid takes us through some of the key moments in a career which began with dances on Dummond Street and culminated in a string of undisputed classics for the legendary Treasure Isle label. Reggae historian Steve Barrow poses the questions while master lenseman Don Letts keeps the Dutchess in focus.
