MFT Workbench Hold Down and Linear Clamps From Banggood Review [GIFTED] Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-09-29 | The best thing about MFT (Multi-Function Table) style workbenches is their work holding ability. Of course, the types of clamps used make a big difference. The usual go-to for this, is to use the Festool pattern guide rail clamps be they the ratchet or screw down type. Festool did however come up with two other types; the MFT-SP linear or in-line clamps and the MFT-HZ hold downs. As often happens, imitations soon follow and, in this review I'll be reviewing the Enjoywood version of the hold down and the Duratec version of the linear style.Both are extremely good value for money considering their performance! I was asked if I could make some and, they were surprising quick and easy to make. If you're a woodworker looking for potential stocking filler (I know...too early!) ideas or want some affordable items on a winter market stall, these are a great option to consider. A great use for those tiny scraps of exotics you might have lying around and couldn't bear to part with too! You don't even need much of a workshop to make them either. [Gifted] A Router Table Coping Sled With A Couple Of Great Features! Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-09-02 | This router table coping sled from Enjoywood - with help from Hooked On Wood - has a superb build quality with it's main materials being aluminium, stainless steel and thick perspex. It has truly impressive clamps that, whilst powerful at work holding, are easy to use and don't mark work. It also has what appears to be a couple of unique features. 3 Axis Manual Routing Machine Build, Service and Parts List - You Can Make It! Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-08-18 | Here, I've finally taken the time to provide a full parts list and plate diagrams for a 3 Axis routing machine of my own design. It's featured in many of my videos, working away and, even in it's own videos through it's various iterations, from a basic aluminium profile router sled to what it is now - a sturdy 3 axis machine (4 axis with the turning attachment) utilising HGN12 linear rails and T8 lead screw on the Z-axis. Not having the sensitive electrical components of a cnc, this machine is happy being hung up on the wall when not in use, so ideal for small workshops plus, being a fully manual machine, there's no need to write programs for one off jobs or simple tasks like slab/board flattening. I consider it an absolute essential in my workshop for my furniture making and more and, I'm pretty sure most woodworkers would feel the same having used it. DIY Precision Router Guide Rail Adapter - Solid Aluminium - For Mafell and Bosch Guide Rails Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-07-28 | In this video I set about making a guide rail adapter compatible with my Bosch and Mafell guide rails for my Bosch GMF 1600 CE router. The design of it could be adapted for any router or guide rail combination really, be they Festool, Makita, Dewalt, Milwaukee etc. Key measurements are the height from benchtop to the bottom of the rods from the router and, of course, the height of your guide rail.Made from solid aluminium plate, my adapter includes a generous handle for comfort and control. An ample 30mm of travel available via the micro adjust and, fine tuning of fit and friction between guide rail and adapter. Not the prettiest but functionally perfect. This project doesn't need and fancy machinery or tooling in your workshop. Simple Clamp Racks And MFT Angle Cutting Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-05-03 | Another bit of workshop housekeeping - extending my clamp racks. Very simple design these. In making them, realised how effective my variable angle fence for the MFT is at cutting angles on small workpieces. On small workpieces - like these elm clamp rack supports - cutting the mitres can mean your fingers perilously close to the blade of a mitre saw or table saw, absent any means to clamp. Jigs can be made for just this of course but, the angle fence for the MFT, using the guide rail as a clamp, makes cutting mitres on very small pieces safe and easy. What's not to like there?

Making a Step Stool Hop Up For The Workshop from Ply Rips and Firewood! Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-04-22 | In this video, I take some left over scraps of plywood and some spalted elm that was destined for a fire to make a much needed step stool (hop up) for the workshop.The ply rip construction is exactly the same as I showed in my recent video making a ply rip modular workshop cabinet. It's a great method to either make the most of a sheet of ply or, as I'm doing here, using scraps that wouldn't be much use for much else. The small planks of spalted elm are from logs I took (with permission) from a felled, diseased tree local to me. Had them sat around for years, never really using them for furniture (with one exception) but, have proved useful for attractive additions to the workshop.
Making a Rocking Horse / Rocking Stool - Nearly! Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-04-07 | So why is this rocking horse unfinished? Well, approaching Christmas of 2021, I thought it'd be a lovely idea to make a rocking horse/stool for my young nephew. He has some learning difficulties but loves to bounce around on the furniture. Great for him to have his own piece I thought (mum and dad agreed!). And so it began, using offcuts of poplar from a chair prototype, working on it on and off as time allowed. I ran out of suitable lengths of poplar offcuts and it was spring of 2023 before I could start work on it again. By early autumn of '23, it was just waiting for upholstery - at the back of a long queue (the upholstery for my pieces is complex and takes a while). So, there it's sat, un-upholstered for 8 months now. In this 2 1/2 year period, my little nephew is now not so little. He's shot up!! This rocking horse now comedically small for him, hence the "horse with no home". I probably will still finish it. Perhaps donate it to a local children's charity. I can't keep it around. Fills me with a sense of shame!Thought I'd share the build (so far) with you anyway. Hope you enjoy!
An Improvement To An MFT Fence System And Hinged Guide Rail Front Pin! Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-03-22 | I knew when I received it that it'd only be a matter of time before the Benchdogs UK under rail support fence got bent. A slight 9x20mm protrusion from the fence proper, on my version, it was attached via connecting bar. Although these under rail pieces are now machined as a one piece, I still think it'd be a weak point. My fence doesn't stay on the bench. It gets stowed when not in use and so more likely to suffer the odd ding. This is exactly what happened to mine recently, bending my under rail piece slightly. Nearly ruined a whole bunch of drawer bottoms, though thankfully, they were only for me, not a client. In this video then, I go about making the under rail fence stronger. You can often turn the blade when one edge gets dull and, when the blades are done, you can buy a new set, hopefully saving money (and waste) over buying a whole new router bit. A Good Quality Fix For Slipping Parallel Clamps and F-Clamps! Oh...and Some Lidl Clamps. Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-03-08 | Ah...parallel clamps. Whether you're in the love them or hate them camp, I've come to regard them as essential for my chair glue ups. Known under several names (parallel clamp, parallel jaw clamp or body clamp), they're basically large, encased F-clamps but with larger feet. When a clamp like this goes, starts slipping and won't tighten anymore, it seems a lot of people put it down glue on the bar. It's not that. The forces going on in these clamps is more than enough to obliterate even hardened glue retirements on the bar. No, turns out, it's the clamping lever itself and a premium manufacturer - Bessey - presents us with a neat fix. And not just for parallel clamps. As mentioned, these are basically F-clamps so, if you have F-clamps that won't grip anymore, this fix will work for them too. Following this fix, I give you my first thoughts on a cheap pair of Parkside Lidl clamps ...that turned out to need a fix on day 1! You pays your money, you takes your chance. Hope you enjoy. It's a premium accessory with a price to match so I feel it deserves it. My daily user mitre gauge fence up til now has been the Incra Extentable Flip Fence and Flip Shop Stop combo, so, as I review the Hongdui, I thought it'd be interesting to compare the 2. as they're a very similar price. Given my tiny workshop, I can only really keep one of these fences so it really is a shootout to see which one ends up staying on the mitre gauge. Scheppach OSM600 Belt and Bobbin Sander Fix and Upgrade Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-02-05 | Following on from my initial review of this (gifted) belt and bobbin sander from Scheppach, in this video I fix the belt backing plate making if flat. This being made flat, also made it worthwhile adding a mitre gauge to the table top. The results of this combination made for some surprisingly accurate results. *GIFTED* 7600 Lumen Adjustable Ceiling Bulb from Banggood. So Bright! Bisch Basch Bosch 2024-01-24 | I've really struggled with lighting in my little single garage workshop. You might think a small space is easy to light but, when filled with tools and machinery, it leads to many dark corners! These LED workshop and garage lights I found on Banggood proved an immediate improvement. No standing back to see if I can notice any difference. It was just much much brighter! No doubt about as you'll hopefully see in the video. Making A Drill Stand Part 1 - Profile Extrusion In The Workshop Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-12-10 | In this video I endeavour to make a solid drill from aluminium profile extrusion. This is part in which I make the drill stand itself. In part 2, I'll be making the base with adjustable fence to mount it to, as well as doing more comprehensive demo of it in action.This is a straight up and down drill stand, not for angle drilling. I just wanted something that could drill reliably straight even with longer and larger diameter drill bits. I've not tried any drill stand that didn't have some degree of flex when pushed - except for this one!Made around an Openbuilds Spindle Mount with a 43mm sleeve, it can be used with any corded percussion drill, or cordless drill/driver with a 43mm collar. This opened it up for use with my Mafell FM1000 milling motor, turning it into a mobile surfacing router. If you're interested in any of the parts I used, I'll leave some links below. *GIFTED* HONGDUI HD-19 Half Gauge Review Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-12-01 | Another excellently turned out woodworking tool by premium Chinese tool manufacturer Hongdui. It's a marking gauge but, despite the name, doesn't do things by halves (damn! Wish I slipped that into the video somewhere!). This tool can be set to your stock height/thickness, automatically giving half that thickness at the blade end for marking. This makes it a useful centering or centre marking tool, as well as for laying out lapped and half lap joints. MFT Angle Cutting Fence For Plunge Saws From Aluminium Extrusion Profile Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-11-24 | In this, the second video about using aluminium extrusion profiles in the workshop, I'm making an adjustable angle cutting fence for my MFT type bench top. A sliding bevel I suppose you could call it. This will allow me to utilise the plunge saw for reliable, clean cut mitres for my furniture components. Something the mitre saw and table saw are a little inconsistent at. Furniture needs a little more finesse than they can offer. Avery straight forward build this one but, one I think could be of genuine use to some hobbyist woodworkers and tradesman alike. Mine is mounted to a Benchdogs MKII Fence System but, as I mention in the video, it could just as easily mount to a couple of dogs with something like Dave Stantons "Dogs Locks". Making A Sharpening Station From Aluminium Extrusion Profile Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-11-17 | This is the first in a small series of videos I plan to do on using aluminium (aluminum) extrusion profiles (V-slot) in the workshop.I first used it for making 2, half sized MFT type portable work benches some years ago. I quickly realised that the beauty of the stuff is, as your needs change, you can simply disassemble all the components and remake anew. *GIFTED* The Katz Moses Hongdui KM-17 (PRO) Router Plane Banggood Review Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-11-11 | In this review I've really tried to highlight the unique feature that separates this KM-17 router plane from it's premium competition. In doing so, hopefully I've put to bed lazy comparisons I kept seeing all over the internet when researching. In particular, it's likeness (base pattern and fence) to the Veritas. There are actually a number of differences even in these similar parts - some covered in the video - but, where they differ completely is in the blade depth adjustment mechanisms.The blade adjust on the KM-17 actually functions similarly to a ball screw Z-axis on a CNC, just in miniature. This makes for a unique user experience by making adjustment on the fly an absolute breeze compared to it's competitors. After using it, I believe it's set a new standard in functionality. That, added to a machining and material quality easily on a par with Veritas and Lie Nielsen - all of which I 've used to varying degrees - Jonathan Katz Moses and Hongdui have created something a bit special. Mitre Clamping Block For Any Angle - Even Curves! Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-10-09 | Probably the worlds best mitre block because...it'll even allow you to clamp a mitre joint on work pieces with a curved profile. Necessity being the mother of invention again (it's the first I've seen of this design but, if it rings a bell, do let me know below), this little widget enabled me to clamp a curved arm rest to a straight leg for a new chair design. Seems woodworkers workshops are never complete without 1000 clamps. I seem to also have created as many jigs and aids for clamping my - often testing - looping frame furniture designs too! Utilising The Wood Available To Finish A Piece. An Improved Support Foot for The Benchogs Guide Rail Square? Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-03-18 | It might just be me....but I've been bugged by the tiny support foot/rest on the Benchdogs.co.uk guide rail square since I've been using them. If you're ripping something down, narrower than the the distance between the rails anti-splinter strip and the support foot on the square, the rail square can wobble and sway about when you're trying to align to a mark for a cut. Not a deal breaker, just irritating. Well, I've finally done something about it! I show 2 simple fixes in the video. If it's something that's irritated you too, hopefully this will spur you on to just sort it.
A Rocking Chair In English Walnut Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-03-13 | In this video I take you through my building of a new rocking chair design for the Hibbs & Bailey Furniture Company. As ever, the design is based around a looping wooden frame - my signature style if you like. The aim with these designs is to pay homage - in wood - to the minimalist looping steel framed furniture from the 1930s and 40s, from designers like Marcel Breuer/Bauhaus and Eileen Gray.My preference is usually much lighter woods - White Beech, Maple or Sycamore for example. Here, we went with English Walnut. I think the walnut created a beautiful piece, its rich grain and figure adding interest. When on show, this walnut piece is the one people tend to gravitate to first. Building a New Design for Side and Coffee Tables Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-02-24 | Building a side table with spalted elm top and English walnut frame and, a coffee table in white (unsteamed) beech. For such simple looking tables, there's a lot of work involved to create the seamless, smooth blend around the leg tops, stretcher and table top. Use of power tools and hand tools to create the effect. It's both satisfying to do and to run your hand around the finished article. Very tactile and, as an added bonus, have proved very easy to clean!These tables form part of the Looping Collection for the Hibbs & Bailey Furniture Company. Out of Warranty Repair Service from Bosch Professional - Worth It? Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-02-09 | Failures happen. Even with the most reputable brands. Over the decades we've had a good few needs for repair from all sorts of brands: Hilti, Makita, Festool, Paslode (quite a few from Paslode!!), DeWalt and more. This is the first time I've had to use Bosch's repair service though.It seems online is where people go to vent their frustrations when there's a problem - understandable - and I think these negative reviews of service might give a one sided impression of what service is like for most. My personal experience has been largely trouble free getting tools repaired. This includes this recent one from Bosch. A Bespoke Spiral Plywood Staircase Installation ...And A House Renovation! Bisch Basch Bosch 2023-01-21 | This video, by way of available photos, shows the complete rebuild and renovation of an 18th century coach house, in a picturesque spot on the banks of a Cornish estuary. One feature of this build people have shown interest in seeing more about, is the bespoke plywood spiral staircase. You can see that coming together at 5:54 in the video. 10 layers of beautiful birch ply make up each step. 9 pieces forming a sculpted riser, with the 10th tread piece featuring a fluted walnut inlay, and lipped with sycamore for protection.This build was quite the rollercoaster and spanned the course of 2 years and was to prove the last job of it's type (site/construction) for me and my mentor. The build could probably have been completed in 8 months but it proved quite the stop start endeavour due to being on the grounds of a busy guest house, along with serious illness putting the job on hold for a number of months. Apologies for the quality of the photos and footage used. When we started this project, I didn't have a Youtube channel and the pictures taken were purely for our own memories. Sometimes, better - and/or safer - results can be had from template routing on the workbench over the router table. How I Finish My Wooden Furniture Bisch Basch Bosch 2022-12-21 | There's no one finish that gives me a uniform look across my furniture collection, whatever the wood. To that end, I developed a process using 3 different finish types, that give me that look across the collection among the variety of woods I use. For the light coloured woods - for example Poplar, Ash, White Beech (unsteamed beech) and maple - I use a finish called Bona Mega. The natural/neutral one. For the richer coloured woods - for example Walnut, Iroko, Cherry etc - I use my own oil/varnish blend.Lastly, for oak specifically, I use Osmo hard wax oil. Their Clear Glossy in particular.My process takes time but, with all 3 of the finishes after the 2 stage polishing, they would all appear to have used the same finish. They all share a pleasing glint and reflection without being glossy. All still feel like wood and importantly, are durable and low maintenance.
Making a Bent Wood Lamination Former Bisch Basch Bosch 2022-12-07 | A few more details if you expand the description. I only cover one type of form and process in this video, and along a uniform radius.There's a fair bit of information on glu-lam and bent wood forms online. Not all of it good if I'm honest.The type of form shown in this video is a male + female press. These are best for glued laminations, particularly those whose laminated edges will be on show, as they give uniform, consistent results.You can also use either just a female or male form, using clamps or straps to hold the lamination to the form. Personally, I would say this is best suited to steam bends for the most part. Vacuum is an excellent option for wider sheet veneers. How thick your strips or veneers for your lamination will need to be depends on a few things. In this video mine, at 4mm, were quite thick. As I was using a shallow, uniform radius, this was fine. If you want more acute radii. undulations and/or twists, it may be necessary to use much thinner veneers of 1.5 or 1mm for example. There's lots of opinions on glues. PVA's, PU's, powder resins like Cascamite or epoxies like I used are all fine. As mentioned in the video, PVA's (and PU's) have some elasticity which may be desirable. Cascamite and epoxies are a more rigid bond, indeed "phenol resorcinol formaldehyde" adhesives like cascamite, as well as epoxies, have been widely used in laminations for a long time in construction, boatbuilding and furniture making. On lighter coloured woods, I'd recommend epoxy as PU's and cascamite can be a bit showy. The latter do have excellent gap filling properties though which could be beneficial and, on darker woods, their slightly more showy glue line isn't an issue. Check your chosen glues pot and cure times, as well as suitability for laminations with distributors and manufacturers.
