Another GL Christmas Classic! A few years ago I recorded the calls from Lew (better known as "The Crabby Christmas Light Guy") on a cassette tape so they could be played back whenever I have the need to hear them. The 2nd and last call was recorded live in 2011 while the first call from 2009 was taken off a "Best Of" that was aired a few days later. Since these recordings were taken off AM radio and recorded onto cheap church voice grade cassettes and extra thin 120 min cassettes, the audio quality varies per recording. Midland WR-100 Weather Radio Repair (silent, weak, or squealing tuner)

airplaneengine 2022-09-09 | This is a fairly easy repair for Midland WR-100 weather radios that exhibit a silent, weak, or squealing tuner. While it is possible your issue may be different, I have found the ceramic IF filter (black rectangular box labeled CQ 33-450E on the circuit board) has a tendency to leak (electrically), creating a low resistance path between the ground and IF input of the tuner chip. To test if this is the issue with your radio, carefully desolder and remove the original filter, and power up the radio. If your radio was dead silent before, you should hear louder hiss and static with the filter removed. If you have a small (~68pf or greater) ceramic capacitor at hand, you can place it across the input and output pads (the off-center hole and end hole closest to the display), and you should hear your local weather radio station. If the radio works well and you live close enough the transmitter, with very weak or no adjacent signals, you may choose to leave the capacitor in place of the filter. For best performance, it is suggested you replace the filter with another filter. The original filter has a center frequency of 450kHz and a 6dB bandwidth of ±7.5kHz. A commonly found online (as of posting this) exact drop-in replacement is the LT450EW. The lower profile LTS450 series filter has the same pin spacing and will work as well. Wider filters with D suffix (±10kHz BW) and C suffix (±12.5kHz BW) will also work.

I’ve had three of these Midland weather radios working around the house and garage for 15+ years, and so far all three have been working without issue. I’ve only been introduced to the problems with these radios when I started to pick them up from thrift stores with the intention to give them to family members.

I happened to have been repairing this radio just while the weekly test was sent, didn't even get a chance to finish soldering it before the test.

Unscoped aircheck of "KQ92" 92.5/1440 KQRS Minneapolis/St.Paul. Dated to early February of 1979. Rescued off a home recorded 8-track tape (recorded over Santana). Complete with music and commercials. Uploaded in celebration of 50 years of 92.5 KQRS 1968-2018!

This is a case where the head had to be aligned to the particular recording on the tape to reduce crosstalk from the previous recording (Santana). The recorder used to record over Santana had a misaligned head which wasn't able to completely erase the previous recording.

The excessive "hiss" heard is most likely due to poor reception or tuning.

About the source tape, playback VCR and analog to digital transfer device.

This tape was recorded by a cousin who lived nearly 60 miles away from where KMWB was transmitted, KMWB 23 was a UHF channel so distance coverage wasn't as great as VHF channels. This could explain the fuzzy picture (although there's many other factors). Since 2006, KMWB is now known as WUCW "The CW 23 Twin Cities".

8-Track Strobe Tape (built in lamp)

airplaneengine 2017-06-10 | Strobe tape housed in modified 8-track cartridge. Works the same as turntable strobes...only on a tape. The lines will appear to stand still if the tape is being drawn at the correct speed. They will creep to the left if the player plays fast, and creep to the right if the player plays slow.

The strobe tape pattern was designed with graphics design/image editing software and printed out on 8x24 paper. The pattern is checked for accuracy with an engineers ruler (16 lines per inch), and then trimmed to a 1/4" strip.

With 16 lines per inch, a neon lamp with a diode in series for half-wave rectification is used to properly view the strobe tape with the naked eye. If 32 lines per inch are used, half-wave rectification of the current supplying the lamp wouldn't be necessary, however, 32 lines are pretty thin and 16 lines is easier to view and follow. A crystal controlled LED could also be used where accuracy of the mains line frequency cannot be trusted.

airplaneengine 2017-05-21 | FULL SHOW! Zepp and Terri as heard on election day 2016! Recording starts at 5:00pm. Music and commercials 'scoped out. A cassette deck on a timer was used to record this, and sometimes they would start just a little before 5pm... Most of my recordings were done with a digital recorder, some were done with a cassette deck, and some were done with a HiFi VCR. The VCR came in handy as I could set it to record at a specific time for more than one day and could fit 4 2-hour shows on one T-160 in EP mode. The cassette deck was used when the HDD in the digital recorder was full. Unfortunately, not all tape recordings were digitized before being recorded over, especially the shows from their earlier months.

The lines will appear to stand still if the tape is being drawn at the correct speed. They will creep to the left if the player plays fast, and creep to the right if the player plays slow.

The splice on this short loop causes the tape to vibrate more than I'd like, that's why I'm using a pencil to pull the tape tighter in the video. A longer loop is in the works. This was designed with graphics design/image editing software and printed on standard 8.5x11 paper. It was checked for accuracy with an engineering ruler.

This strobe tape has 16 lines per inch as initially I thought 32 lines per inch would appear too "thin". With 16 lines per inch, a neon lamp with a diode in series for half-wave rectification is used. If 32 lines per inch are used, half-wave rectification of the current supplying the lamp wouldn't be necessary. A crystal controlled LED could also be used where accuracy of the mains line frequency cannot be trusted.

Tape strobes are nothing new, they've been around for many years, however I'm not aware of anyone currently manufacturing them. 8-Track Tape Repair: Replacing a Melted Pinch Roller

In this video I open a 5 hook Ampex cartridge to replace a melted pinch roller. Finding a melted pinch roller is very common when dealing with older Ampex and Lear Jet cartridges. If a cartridge with a soft/melted pinch roller were to be inserted into a player, it would instantly be a big hard to clean mess and would mess up the tape. Fortunately if you notice the pinch roller before attempting to play the tape, the roller can re replaced without any damage to the tape and your player. The best way to get a replacement roller is to get it from a donor cartridge. Most RCA cartridges, most Warner Bros. cartridges and most Scotch blank cartridges have rollers that will work as replacement rollers. In this video I use a roller taken from a RCA cartridge.

A GL Christmas favorite! Hopefully I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here by uploading the entire Christmas Light Rivalry, I am aware that they are available on the latest Garage Logic CD (this was NOT ripped from the CD). Some years back I recorded all the installments the Christmas Light Rivalry off the radio during one of those annual playback periods and put them all together on this cassette so I could play it whenever I wanted. Since I recorded the parts (or "installments") straight off AM radio on some cheap church voice grade cassettes, the audio quality varies between recordings. I do believe the prank was done back around 1997-98. I apologize for the distorted and hiss filled recording, this was recorded off AM radio using low end equipment on a mix of cheap and worn out tapes. At the time, I was recording the show for time shifting purposes and not always intending to keep every recording.

Reloading an Echoplex Cartridge

Supplies needed:
•Lazy Susan or a Turntable
•Suitable 8-Track Cartridge (or reel of cartridge tape)
•Double Sided Tape
•Reel To Reel Splicing Tape
•Splice Block
•Nice Sharp Razor Blade
•Scissors
•Echoplex Cartridge...of course

In this video I'm reloading a newer aftermarket metal cartridge for an EP-3 but you can reload a stock Echoplex cartridge the same way. I have the reels stuck to a lazy Susan with double sided tape, spaced apart the same as the posts in the cartridge. The tape I'm using is out of a lightly used RCA 8-track cartridge from 1974 (sorry Henry Mancini fans but I have enough Mancini cartridges already). I usually suggest using tape out of new or like new blank 8-tracks instead out of prerecorded 8-tracks but I liked the look and condition of the tape and these old RCA carts have good tape that can reproduce well. If you don't have any nice blank 8-tracks to use and you can only find prerecorded 8-tracks, try to use one that contains music that is usually not in demand. With any used 8-track, inspect the exposed tape at the end, if it looks worn, dirty or damaged, put it back. Some tapes have a glossy oxide finish and some have a matte oxide finish, both are acceptable. Many people also choose to go out and find a reel of lubricated cartridge tape to reload their Echoplex carts with. Cartridge tape is lubricated on the backside of the tape with graphite, you can not, I repeat CAN NOT use regular reel to reel tape (make note that "silicone lubricated" is not the same as the graphite backcoating on cartridge tape). Ampex 406, 456, 457 and 478 (which many seem to choose to reload their carts with) are all fine sounding tapes however these tapes are NOT made for continuous loop cartridges and will eventually tighten up and possibly jam if used. They can also suffer from SSS (Sticky Shed Syndrome) which is the deterioration of the binders in the tape (binder hydrolysis). A tape suffering from SSS will usually squeal and bind up on the heads. If you have the option to choose (such as on eBay) which brand of blank 8-track to use, I suggest Maxell UD and LN, 3M Scotch Dynarange and Classic, Memorex and BASF. Be careful of later Radio Shack Realistic blanks. I would stay away from 8-tracks that are longer than 90 minutes as the tape may be thinner which could wear out faster (they are also rare and collectable). It doesn't hurt to bulk erase used (prerecorded) tape, however if you don't have an eraser, it isn't necessary. If the Echoplex is functioning properly and the heads are aligned, the tape will be erased as the unit is used and the previous recording shouldn't be heard.

Now, I don't have experience with those exact tapes listed on that site but being sold for use in broadcast carts (a continuous loop cartridge that works like an 8-track) I would assume it would be perfectly fine to use in an Echoplex cartridge. Not the cheapest tape but at least you know a professional quality option is available.

When you are winding the tape onto the reels, you want the oxide side to face outwards. Once you have enough tape wound onto the reels (can be your personal preference, Echoplex carts were usually wound to be about 2 minutes long), carefully lift the reels off the lazy Susan or Turntable and place them into the cartridge. Try not to touch the oxide side of the tape too much, you should make sure your hands are clean and dry before handling the tape. When you go to splice the ends together, use tape made for splicing magnetic reel to reel tape and not regular sticky tape such as Scotch Magic tape as the adhesive can bleed over time. You will want to cut the ends of the tape so they will come together perfectly and then apply the splicing tape to the backside of the tape. Ideally you don't want the splice to be audible but since there are no pressure pads forcing the tape to the heads and the tape tensioning is not perfect, you may hear a dropout as it passes by (screwing up your sustained echo sound). After you have the tape spliced, you can place it in the Echoplex, thread it and turn it on. If you have a little slack in the tape, it should be taken up shortly after you turn it on. Keep your hand on the off switch for one cycle (until your splice comes back around) just in case the tape should start to be eaten or jam up in the cartridge.
