Hot Food | POEM | Kids' Poems and Stories With Michael Rosen From The Hypnotiser Published by Lions Poetry
michaelrosen.co.uk/books Check out Michael's website for news, updates, and fun, as well as great homeschooling UK resources and idea.
Why not share this Hot Food Nice clip. Discuss performance poetry. Look at other Michael Rosen poems. How does Michael's work compare and contrast with another poet? Teachers - work with pupils to create a performance piece for selected poems. Pupils could create their own story poems about food. Use this as a stimulus for pupils own independent research on Michael Rosen.
I wrote a book of poems for children called The Hypnotiser some years ago and then it went out of print. I couldn’t get anyone to reprint it, so I asked my son Joe to film me performing the book for this website. All you need to do is click on whichever poem you want in the gallery below. There are second-hand copies of The Hypnotiser available on various sites on the web, most obviously at Amazon, Abe Books and eBay.
REVIEW 'Right class 6, RIGHT CLASS 6, I'm talking, I'm talking, I want complete quiet and that includes you, David Alexander, yes you...' 'The Outing', by Michael Rosen, just one of the fantastic and hilarious poems from his short story and poetry collection The Hypnotiser. This particular poem was read to me as a young child in primary school time and time again. Each time the names in the poem were changed to the names of the pupils in my class. It never got old, or less hilarious and I wouldn't hesitate in reading this to my future classes during my teaching career.
Other great poems from this collection include 'The Car Trip'; a highlight of the sibling chaos that goes on in the back of the car when Mum is driving: 'He started it. I didn't. He started it...', 'Tomato 1'; the gruelling ordeal of being given a tomato to eat by your mother and you simply just hate tomatoes, and 'Tidy Your Room'; every child's nightmare. Each and every poem and short story relates to children through typical experiences that most would have endured. This book enlightens children's love and enthusiasm for poetry, an almost forgotten about genre for most children; a runner up to fiction books.
This book can have many uses in the classroom; appropriate for children in Key Stage Two it can be read by the teacher at the end of the day during story time, like in my own experience at primary school. Or, during a poetry topic in Literacy, this book could model fun, interesting, age appropriate poetry that will inspire children to write their own poems. Likewise for shared reading; this book would be fantastic to put under the visualiser and look through with the class at the how poems are written, their structure, do they rhyme? do they tell a story? All sorts of things can be addressed with the class as a whole.
This book needs to be exposed to children, whether at school on the class bookshelf, or online where you can find video clips of Michael Rosen performing these poems; a great filler for those odd five minutes that arise during the busy school day. A Must read, not just for children but teachers as well!
Who is Michael Rosen? My first book for children was called Mind Your Own Business and it came out in 1974. Quentin Blake did wonderful line drawings for it.
Ever since then, I’ve been doing these things:
Writing books
Writing articles for newspapers and magazines
Going to schools, libraries and theatres and performing the poems in my books
Helping children write poems and stories
Making radio programmes, mostly about words, language or books
Appearing on TV, either reading books, or talking about books
Teaching at universities about children’s literature
Running workshops for teachers about poetry
In any week, I might be doing all of these things! To tell the truth, I don’t really know what I’m doing tomorrow, unless I look in my diary to see.

The Michael Rosen Reading for Pleasure book - amzn.to/2WkkUxb
The years pass and the grass grows, the grass grows over the years disappear...
Underground clues are found. Listen! And we can hear across a hundred million years...
The sound of the sea where now there’s a tree; giant lizards in the sky wide wings take them high swooping on fish in the waves gliding over rocks and caves flapping and stopping leaving their droppings for millions of years right here, just here.
The years pass and the grass grows, the grass grows over the years disappear.
What were droppings and bone turn to stone deep down, day and night silent, slow, out of sight vast beyond measure a secret treasure deep in the ground waiting to be found.
Up above people come and go their pigs and cows moving slow free to graze upon the ground until a Lord puts fences round: nowhere for the pigs and cows, and with the people starving now one Jack o’ the Style leads a revolt with a hundred others they call a halt break the fences and burst back through with pigs and cows, their hens and ewes.
The years pass and the grass grows, the grass grows over the years disappear.
One John Ball from Burnell way beneath the grass, said there lay some sort o’ magical stuff the which - if ye had enough, mixed it right, made it just so, it’d make any plant grow and in a matter of just a few years thousands came and dug right here.
Very few knew that all the while they were free to do so, ‘cos of Jack o’ the Style very few knew that the reason why was down to lizards in the sky for millions of years, leaving behind what many years later, others would find.
The years pass and the grass grows, the grass grows over the years disappear and here we are: we stand right here.

"In March 2020, I got Covid. My condition dipped and I was put into an induced coma for 40 days. By the time I got home after 3 months in hospital, I was weak and confused. I started to write poems to help me get a handle on what had happened and what was happening day by day now that I was out. I also had a diary that the nurses wrote for me while I was unconscious. This film is the chain of poems, nurses' letters and my wife Emma's emails to the family. I can see now that it's a map of what we all went through in that time: patients, doctors, nurses, families and the attitudes that emerged in that historic moment ."
This film has been supported by Apples and Snakes as part of their 40th anniversary.
Written and Performed by Michael Rosen Cinematography and Editing: Matthew Dove Producer: Lisa Mead (Apples and Snakes)

#MichaelRosen #KidsTV #homeschoolingukCockerel Dog and Fox | Aesops Fable | Kids Poems and Stories with Michael RosenKids’ Poems and Stories With Michael Rosen2022-07-28 | Popular storyteller Rosen (We’re Going on a Bear Hunt) distills 13 well-known Aesop’s fables into one-page retellings, illustrated in folk-art style by Canadian artist Hacikyan.
Michael Rosen engages the stories’ livelier aspects, and Hacikyan’s stylized illustrations, chalked on black backgrounds, suggest troublesome dreams on moonless nights.
In “Cockerel, Dog and Fox,” a treed rooster protects himself by asking the predator to wake his “Doorman” (“So Fox woke up Dog. And Dog snarled and snapped and tore Fox apart quicker than it takes a leaf to fall from a tree”). Rosen supplies morals tailored for today’s cultures of bullying and savvy social interactions.
In “Dog and Wolf,” a wolf with an empty stomach eyes a “sleek and fat” dog’s collar and snarls, “I’d rather be free than a well-fed slave.”
When Fox praises Crow’s voice, so that Crow opens his mouth and drops a piece of cheese, Rosen remarks that sneaky individuals use compliments “just so they can get something from you.”
There is comfort in these pages, the fables provide ample material for conversation.

With the support of doctors and nurses — and his trusty NHS walking stick, that he named 'Sticky — he manages to embark on the slow steps to recovery.
Encouraged by an outpouring of affection, and support from social media, Michael’s recovery has been well documented on Twitter in particular: Sticky would appear in frequent tweets, hiding against a grey sofa, or reproaching Michael for not being used.
Running workshops for teachers about poetry
and now - beatboxing
In any week, I might be doing all of these things! To tell the truth, I don’t really know what I’m doing tomorrow, unless I look in my diary to see.

Who is Michael Rosen? He's not Corbin Bernsen or Tony Ross My first book for children was called Mind Your Own Business and it came out in 1974. Quentin Blake did wonderful line drawings for it.
Ever since then, I’ve been doing these things:
Writing books
Writing articles for newspapers and magazines
Going to schools, libraries and theatres and performing the poems in my books
Helping children write poems and stories
Making radio programmes, mostly about words, language or books
Appearing on TV, either reading books, or talking about books
Teaching at universities about children’s literature
Running workshops for teachers about poetry
and now - beatboxing
In any week, I might be doing all of these things! To tell the truth, I don’t really know what I’m doing tomorrow, unless I look in my diary to see.
