During the planning of the arrangement, I have been debating which instruments I should use for it. After that, finding out how to voice those instruments. I have kinda been busy with work-related items, as of, working additional days to help cover for the team with work. Because of that, during the preparation to record the footage for the video, I have been exhausted. So it took longer to record the footage (and practice for it). Oh well, down to talking about the cover.So I decided to add some newly-acquired instruments (other than the newly-acquired instruments I got after this) to play this arrangement. That being the Ibanez Acoustic guitar and Kala Baritone Ukulele. I am glad that I was able to use my Johnson Electric guitar for this video because in the choruses of this, it was originally written for piano and guitar, but the piano part was a bit difficult for me to do and I haven't played in a while, so I was out of practice and I dragged it out for way too long. This was fun to arrange and to record. Motivation was running a bit dry for a bit, followed by being preoccupied with a newly released game (released 2/2). Ideas were being put on paper, then I decided to go another direction. You know how it goes sometimes.So to the contents of the video. One thing you might notice is that I am leading with a Soprano Sax, with even more saxes as background horns. Yep, that's different from what I normally do, but I decided the resonance of the saxophones might be better than me trying to keep my brass instruments in tune. Things sort of gotten busy for me over the past few months, but hey, life happens. I hope to start arranging something quick before December ends.So for this cover, I wanted to have the guitar take the main melody, as I wanted a bit of a bluesy attitude for this rather than an "outside on the ranch" type of feel. The kick and snare for this cover is similar to the original song, however, I added some cymbals and hi-hats to add some oomph into the beat. And then I tried something I don't normally do: trombone solo. I kinda got tired at the end, so it looks like I was trying to go up in pitch, but I ended up just being like whatever on that last note. Well, not really much to say on this one. I had to start a new "project" in Premiere because the one I was using was so big that it ended up slowing everything DOWN. Like, I couldn't work at all. I initially thought it was because I was messing around with Proxies and Multicam for the first time, but that's definitely not it. All that to say, I did not carry my end slate over, so I figured I might try something different this time.So the Seaport City of Ruan originally has this tricky feel that I decided to somehow turn into a straight feel. That, of course, will make some melody lines all the trickier because you're playing a melody meant for the trickier 6/8 feel on a straight 6/8 feel. This was a fun cover to work on. I did have a bit of a struggle with the keyboard and guitar parts, but that usually comes with the territory of trying to use more than one family of instruments to make a cover.What made me want to cover this one? This was the second of the two songs that I wanted to cover for the one-shot D&D session that I was going to run, but I decided to do something else, but I had the song stuck in my head, so I decided to go ahead and roll with it. I know I need more practice on keyboard because my left hand does nothing while my right hand does melody. That makes the keyboard melody during the "verse" feel so much weaker than the guitar "verse." Oh well, I hope you guys enjoy! Again, not sure when the next VGM cover comes out. I planned to get something out a lot sooner, but my schedule started picking back up and I have been given a task that sort of set me back a little. That was to run a one-shot TTRPG. So I decided I'm going to create a 5e one-shot with Trails in the Sky because that was the only way I was going to do this. In doing this, I decided to try to get some sort of content out on here by covering a song from the game, so I can use it in the one-shot. Still took forever because I wanted to follow someone's advice on editing and Premiere Pro said nope!Rock on the Road fit perfectly with the fact that I was thinking of that song as a means to get the clarinet out and play some music on it. It was the hardest instrument to record for, but I'm glad I did for once, as it's been too long. The easiest part to record was the guitar. Not very much to do when you're only doing a simple strumming pattern. I wanted to keep it simple, short, and sweet. I had this theme in mind whenever I was trying to arrange a different cover for a theme from the same game. I also wanted to just keep things simple for my sake since I haven't really been having the time to be able to just spit out covers, what with Trails into Reverie being out and my trying to get through that game.The instrumentation is mostly like I normally map it out except no keyboard. I will say that the most difficult part to record was the Trumpet part. Fódlan Winds (2023) from Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2023-06-16 | Hello.This video is a cover of a song that I have previously covered back in 2020. I was thinking about this track quite a bit recently, and realized I wanted to cover it again, and hopefully have it turn out better than the cover I put out back then. So there are probably a couple of things that you might notice throughout the cover. One of these is the tone of my tenor sax. It has a darker tone and a bit of a windy sound to it. Not only am I using a different mouthpiece, but I am also using a completely different tenor sax. Specifically, the Anthem A-2000 tenor saxophone that has not seen use for a video since the Heaven cover from back in 2020. Why am I using this? Because the horn and mouthpiece I normally use is at the shop getting a neck screw replaced and some attention to where the sax holds the neck. Also, forgive me during the tenor saxophone solo. As I'm learning how to use my DAW, I couldn't figure out how to get two takes to sort of blend together, so it sounds like I'm tonguing an extra note when I'm actually not, which would be obvious to see because of a transition between two videos with my tenor at that part.For this cover, I decided to strip it down to just a 5-piece instrumentation (4 if you don't count drums because I had to program those. It is surprising how much ground each part covers and how easy it is to edit when you don't have so many parts going on for a single cover. I really think this cover came out well, and better than my 2020 attempt at covering this song.Alright. To try to get back into this after getting finished with Trails to Azure, I decided to take a dip into one of the songs in the Sonic Series and Tidal Tempest Zone was the easiest cover to try to work on. I have (again) switched to another DAW called Cakewalk, so I'm trying to get familiar with how things work on it, so this cover might sound less quality than the other covers I have been working on.I will say as a warning that I might be busy in the time to come, and might not be able to work on these as much as I want to while I am trying to manage my time a bit better. I am also making time for other things in my life that can take up quite a bit of time. Afternoon in Crossbell from Trails from Zero | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2023-03-24 | Ayo!Back with another Trails from Zero cover, and 10 days or so after Trails to Azure dropped here in the States! I will warn y'all ahead of time that I might not upload as often as I am when the game finally drops because I'm probably going to commit a lot of my time to try to get through that game.I decided to do a double guitar, double saxophone setup for the melodic structure of the song. I remember in the original, where the saxophones are doing the B-part together, those were actually flutes and I really wished I owned a flute and knew how to play. I could've broke out the clarinet, but the DAW I was using (not the one I normally use) only allowed 8 inputs at a time. I've been recently going through the Sora no Kiseki (Trails in the Sky) games, and as soon as Chapter 1 of SC hit and I hit the highway and heard this, I was like, "hmm, I can get down with this" because it went from a "let's go adventuring vibe" from the first game ("The Way They Walk in Liberl", I think) to a whole vibe with emotion (considering the ending of the first game and what happens before prologue). After hearing it so many times, I decided I wanted to add it to my repertoire.So, obviously, when you want to cover a whole vibe, you have to do it with Soprano Sax. At least, that's what I do. Then I wanted to give the Trombone a chance of doing melody. From me, it was a bit shaky, but I felt that was the best I can give without doing too many retakes and tiring out my chops. Get Over the Barrier! from Trails from Zero (Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2023-01-20 | Happy first video of the New Year! I know that this has probably been weeks since the new year began, but between work and my other hobbies, I haven't really been putting any time to arrange any covers. Well, I transcribed 5 possible candidates, this one being included, so expect some VGM covers to be pushed out here in the next months to come. If I play my cards right, the next cover, which have already been arranged and is ready to record as the day I am uploading this, should follow behind this one three weeks out from when this video goes live. Hopefully I can keep up before I have to give my attention to Trails in the Sky the Third and, soon after, Trails from Azure, which should drop in the states this year. No promises though.The beginning sequence is a two-violin melody, of which, for some reason, I get excited about Japanese violin lines in JPOP. Anyway, I own no violins, so I use my saxes to at least get that going. Surprisingly enough, I haven't had too rough a time with the Brass instruments. If anything, those parts were very easy, granted my embouchure wasn't crap during the time of recording. I also bought a new Keyboard, as you might see here during the *SPOILER ALERT* keyboard solo. Ice Paradise [Act 1] from Sonic Advance 2 | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2022-12-25 | What's up?!I have not been keeping up with uploads as much as I have been recently. A lot of it is a mix of lost motivation and the fact that I have to put things aside for some of my other hobbies. Once I got back on MuseScore, I knew that the next tune I arrange would have to be a winter-themed cover. What better one than the Ice Paradise Zone from Sonic Advance 2! I will admit, there were some things that were tricky when it came to arranging this tune. There are some bells in the original VGM track that would make the cover feel a bit empty if it wasn't included. With that in mind, I decided to delegate that to the guitar part as it doesn't need to chord/strum throughout the whole song. The other part that was tricky was writing/programming the drum part. With this coming out of a Game Boy Advance cartridge, it is not very easy to decipher what pieces of the kit would be utilized, so I transcribed it the best I could on MuseScort.The horn parts were fun to record. Also, this is probably the first time that I didn't have to reduce so many minutes of trombone and keyboard footage to fit the almost 4-minute video here. Trombone was mainly background that was hitting the same notes. Keyboard, I decided if I mess up a bit I mess up a bit. Crossing the Iron Bridge from Trails from Zero | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2022-11-04 | Ayo!So we're going to go from Zero (RoAW Zero) to Zero (Trails from Zero) here!Trails from Zero released for the US about a month or so ago and I've been spending the past few weeks trying to complete a run of the game, of which I completed this past weekend (the weekend before October 31). A good thing about taking the time to play video games is also finding out what music I can try to cover. I knew this one (though a bit difficult on a few instruments) and a couple others are definitely candidates for being covered. I had this song stuck in my head for a while, so I decided to work on this one.Let's talk about instrumentation. It's a bit weird, ain't it? You don't normally hear electric guitar in this, but to fill out for instruments I don't have or don't have the patience to try to get it to work, the electric had to do. I thought this song was the perfect song for a soprano saxophone, considering the higher notes that were being played throughout the melody. Keys were a bit difficult, so much that I would spend 5 minutes on a part of the song, get it right, then keep messing up on the next parts for 5 minutes until I got it right in recording, rinse and repeat. Acoustic and bass are a must. Owarani Sekai is the opening song to this game, and to me, it almost has the Sonic Heroes opening song feeling from it, which is why it probably stuck with me. This song ended up the next one I'd cover because I just randomly made a new score on MuseScore and was listening to the song and transcribing it onto the score. Because I couldn't really find any opportunity to try to be extra on this, the instrumental selection was a bit peeled back. I should apologize ahead of time about the Soprano Sax. I initially thought about adding a drum part somewhere in the song, but overall, I figured I'll keep it as an acoustic cover. Another thing you might notice is the Traveler Guitar. For those who aren't familiar, I played this instrument for the first time on the 2020 Acoustic Cover of "A Way of Life." Thankfully, I don't think I played as horrible here as I think I did on that one. Reason I took so long again on putting up another cover (I normally try for every 3 weeks) was I wanted to make sure between work and any of my other hobbies that I keep (gaming is one of them; how else am I supposed to find new potential content :p) that I am also taking the time to relax and chill and not burn myself out, even if I don't think I have the time to even rest. First, for those that saw the title and were expecting a song from Sonic Unleashed, sorry! I was also thrown off when I saw that that was what this song was named. Secondly, the rather larger elephant in the room: I am playing something nobody saw me play before. I bought this Mandolin because I imagine a couple of VGM tunes that I know would sound great with a Mandolin, and this song was one of those songs.I kinda have to thank Max Boiko, as well as Santosh and Matt Wong for playing behind this as a request during a VGMCollective livestream. I had this song definitely stuck in my head after hearing them play a run through the song some months ago. One of the passages before the first Tenor Sax solo was kinda inspired by Santosh's background sax line he did (I know none of y'all know what I am referencing).The instrumentation for this cover was probably what you would expect based on common instruments that I would normally use in other covers and the nature of the original tune. I didn't have any type of violin-based instruments or flute to play the melody with, so I wrote out those parts for mandolin, alto sax, and soprano sax. I've tried to play the main piano part with both hands and practice on it every time I visited the music store, but I couldn't get it to click. So I just recorded a part with right hand and the other with the left.I hope you guys enjoy this one. Moonlight Museum from Klonoa 2: Lunateas Veil (Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2022-06-11 | Hello!I'm out here with another cover, and this time I decided to dip back into Klonoa 2's OST. This cover was rather tricky to get down, especially the clarinets that I had to alternate parts between. You'd be proud of me, though: Normally, if I had too much difficulty on recording the clarinets, I would switch out to Soprano Sax and record that instead, but I didn't do that this time, and it actually sounds better being the Clarinets playing where they are.Of course, I have the Alto Sax taking the main melody, with some brass doubling up when the main melody comes around a second time. Then the brass and tenor saxes provide a background along with a guitar in the B part that makes sure you don't get too bored from the A Part of the song. Recording the guitar solo was fun because this was actually not your normal feel that you would record a guitar solo on. Many of the parts I recorded were recorded back in February because I initially wanted to have one of my friends record the part to the keyboard, but a lot of time passed and I was able to get a lot of the chords under my fingers, so in the end of April, I was able to finally record the keys and piano parts to this song. Weird thing for me was that since the score was made already, I couldn't really edit anymore to add background horns on the keyboard solo, so it kinda feels naked. A Way of Life from Persona 3 Portable (2022 Full Band Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2022-03-19 | Hello!As I was listening back on some of the previous covers that I recorded between 2019 and 2020, I, once again, found a cover I have previously done that I could not get out of my head because the way it was done was driving me crazy. The last time I covered "A Way of Life," it was an acoustic cover featuring an alto sax, a tenor sax, and a "traveler's guitar" which is basically an acoustic guitar that is optimal for practicing guitar during late nights. I decided to basically give this cover a makeover.I made a slight change to this video that you might be able to notice. That is the fact that I did not put an outside border on this video like I do the others. I am deciding to stop that, as I started that when I was trying to figure out how to do splits with borders around each video instance, but couldn't get it all figured out. There's also the fact that I've changed camera angles again. I am using the webcam on my PC that I normally livestreamed with (whenever I do livestream). I realized that now I can run that at the same time as Studio One, so I started doing that. Twinkle Snow from Sonic Advance 3 (Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2021-12-05 | Hello! I hope everyone is doing well this holiday season so far. I realized I have not done any song from the Sonic Advance series yet and I thought, "even if I only have one cover for December at least, I think it should be a tune from one of the Sonic Advance games." The candidates in my mind were both this song from Sonic Advance 3 and Ice Mountain Zone from the first Sonic Advance game. I decided I would have an easier time in arranging/recording Twinkle Snow.When going into Twinkle Snow, I remember that each act in a 2D Sonic game always had the main theme of the song, then the alternate version of the song for Act 2, which has been going on since Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) (and I guess, if you count the time variations in Sonic CD for JP and US). In this game specifically, there was a map Hub that had sort of a preview of the stage's music, then Act 1, which is the main theme, Act 2, which is normally a faster, pumped up version of the first act (unless it's one of the later Zones), then Act 3, which starts the tune on the tail end of the song and does a few extra things. I digress.All of that to say, I wanted to do a bit of a big intro, much like what I did in the Genshin Impact cover that I can't remember the name of. Something about City of the Wind or something. For that, I broke out the map hub music for that piece, then jumped right into the first act's music, and that is all I had in mind for this, really.I decided to have the Soprano Sax have the main melody while a guitar and Alto Sax mainly do the ambience feel (besides the melody that the Alto Sax plays on the "chorus" of this). A lot of instrumentation was mixed to make it easier on the one playing the parts (which is me), so things don't seem too boring on one part. I say this because the trumpet gets part of the melody, but then it's part of the background, or a Tenor Sax gets a harmony of the melody, but in other places, it's a background horn.Well, that's it for this description. I currently have a third that I am trying to arrange, but I'm currently trying to get through Metroid Dread before starting on the fourth and - I believe - final TOCS game. So much to do and so little time, I guess. So for this one, I decided to try a more of a laid-back feel by means of switching up the drum kit within Studio One. With that, I also pulled a 4-piece horn with the Alto Sax taking the lead part. I tried so hard to get the intro lead part down as much as I could, but I managed to get what I got on camera and I believed that I couldn't get any closer than that. I'm here for fun.I'll have to say the one of the frustrating parts of getting this going was the trombone part, where I would have higher than normal notes for it. Evening Moments from Trails of Cold Steel (Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2021-09-19 | Yo!To start off the description of this video, I apologize about it being a month and a half since the previous video. I normally put out a new video every 3 weeks, but I felt I needed a bit more time to enjoy more of the things I like to do outside of work and church. In this case, I have been going through this game series from Falcom named The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel. I am currently on Chapter 3 of TOCS3 at the time I am editing this description (I uploaded this on 9/18/21).I should probably also mention that the quality got scaled back a small bit. I used 2 cameras for this, and I decided since I was recording on the Galaxy S8 instead of my current Galaxy S20 (phone overheats and dies), If I do 60 fps, it will limit me 10 minutes per video, but it doesn't do that for 30 fps, so that's something I will have to deal with that for a bit until I get a new camera or phone, whichever comes first....So while I was off playing video games, I picked a few songs to transcribe the melody for the first TOCS game and this was one of them. I transcribe the melodies by hand while on my lunch at work, then during my livestreams (check below link), I'll write an arrangement of it for myself to cover, although much of it is not a guaranteed cover.When it comes to the instrumentation, I wanted to do a bit of a gospel feel for this while using an instrument you have not seen me use since my Genshin Impact cover. The bass is a bit tingy, but that's because I had to adjust the neck because I started having an action problem with this bass. I wanted to use the Soprano Sax to match the pitch of the clarinet in the melody. Because of this, I ended up at 500 subscribers on last Tuesday, I think. It's been a bit since I checked, but nonetheless, thanks, everyone, for your support!Ok, so let's talk about the video.So, the main thing that you might notice when watching this video is the fact that instead of standing in front of my PC, I am in a corner of a room. This is actually the same room I normally record my footage in, I just decided to record at a spot with a bit more color to it. As far as the music side of things, I decided to pull back a little bit, but not much, for this cover. By that, I mean I did not program or write out drums for this. Instead, I, at the last moment, decided to use a computer chair's leg rest as a kick drum while using a shaker as another rhythm instrument. I also wanted to show off my new Ibanez AX120 guitar, so I ended up using it in this video. Piano was also a must for me on this one because this song represents a level that is a pathway to come in contact with the goddess of Lunatea. So, I wanted to bring a bit of a church feeling to this one, despite using a U-Bass for the bass.One of the frustrating parts of recording this cover was that I don't think I can no longer use my Galaxy S20 for a camera. It's a really good camera, but the phone likes to shut off if it overheats, and when that happens, it could take ages to get the phone to power on all the way (even when cooled down). So I am using my previous phone, the Galaxy S8. Great camera, but it will only let me record in 10-minute intervals, so I had to be careful not to mess up so much while recording each part. Which leads me into my next piece of frustration, the trumpet part (and technically the trombone part). I am not a brass player primarily, but I kinda know my ways around the fingering and the positions for both the trumpet and the trombone. Now, when it comes to embouchure/partition control, that's a whole different story. Most times, I would get one part perfectly, but totally mess up the next part by overblowing the note I needed to play. Now, trombone, while not having much trouble with that, a lot of times I end up uncertain of the positioning at times and it would cause me to have to do a retake. Last thing: The saxes. Before recording the video, it's been forever since I've played on either of these saxes. If I would have known, I would have made it to where Ayato Amagiri would have occupied the "Brand-new World" thumbnail, Julis Riessfeld for "Waiting for the Rain", Claudia Enfield for "Hold You in the Wind" and then Sylvia Lyynhelm for this cover, considering, if I'm not mistaken, her JP Voice Actor is actually Haruka Chisuga, who originally sings this song. Now THAT would have been tight.I really love the soundtrack for Gakusen Toshi Asterisk because of how well the orchestral elements mix in with the electronic elements of the soundtrack. Thanks to Rasmus Faber for that. He actually wasn't the only one who composed this song. Yamada Toshiaki also had part in writing this as well. Between the chord changes and the melodies and the electronic feel of the song, I always love to jam to this.It took me so long to record this one because the parts that the soprano saxophones are playing used to be written for the clarinet. I always had a bit of trouble recording for clarinet because I couldn't get too far without squealing and then my camera overheated (my cell phone). So it was a whole 4-sax arrangement for this. Don't get me wrong. I like how everything turned out at first but there were definitely some glaring things that I felt that I needed to iron out. First thing, the drums. Previous cover of this, I decided to play drums on a keyboard, while not having the audio interface set up correctly. Second thing, I tried to have background saxes do references. I may not have written parts out correctly, but it still came out okay, I guess. Third, the failed altissimo, that's all I have to say about it.Now, for the information for why I made the cover the way it was.This may be a similar feel to the previous cover, but that was because I wanted to keep the same feeling that I originally made the first one. This may have some R&B feels to it. When I made the first cover, I was arranging it based on how I felt at the time. It came out in Sept 2019 because I decided to work on other things during the time I originally planned on working on it. That's during the time "Heartbeat, Heartbreak" dropped on my channel. I still kinda kept the more chill feeling from Mewmore's remix of this song and it is actually dropped during the spring. Brand-new World - Shiena Nishizawa (Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2021-02-21 | Yo, what's good?Am I the only one that struggles with knowing what to write down for a description for videos? Anyways...Coming in with, not only a Japanese music cover, but another cover coming out of "The Asterisk War"! This one was one I contemplated for months, even made a end-slate with the melody of the second bridge of this song in the past. I finally decided that the melody, although with differing rhythms among choruses, was easy to read through and the chord changes were very simple. I decided to go the route of guitar/bass for rhythm section, since the original song is sort of a mix between electronic and rock (which electronic music sets the futuristic theme of the anime, thanks to Rasmus Faber's creation of the soundtrack). There were parts from the original I ended up leaving out (the intro, turnaround into verse 2, and the ending) due to the insufficient ability to keep up on it at 200 bpm. I could've practiced it, but I didn't want to spend too much time on it.I chose Alto Saxophone for all of the parts not otherwise covered by the rhythm section. Dont Slip from Splatoon 2 (Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2021-02-03 | What's up?!So, I've been playing some multiplayer in Splatoon 2 very recently and there were some tracks from the game that got stuck in my game. This one was one of them. Arranging the music for this cover was easy and it allowed me to add a couple of unique ideas for the horns. This cover was a bit challenging to record though for a few reasons: I'm not primarily a brass player, so there were many retakes for the trombone part; and counting for bass and horns were easy, but when it came to guitar, I had to count opposite of bass leading up to the "B-section"; I wanted to do a bit of a horn section, like in Ska music, which kinda worked out well, I think. I wanted to make the saxes more distinct in the A-Section, so I made separate channels post-recording to add tremolo to the saxes to make them sound like inklings singing. This piece seemed like a fun one to expand upon in a cover because the city of Mondstadt's theme is actually multiple pieces within the city, but I was most interested in this particular piece.So, the very beginning is the main melody that you would hear in the region of Mondstadt when morning comes around. Then, normally, when you're in the city when dawn happens, you'll hear that melody, then immediately, you would start hearing "The City Favored by the Wind." That is exactly what's going on here, but I decided to expand upon this and I think it has gone well.A bit of transparency, there are times that I do MANY retakes on some of these parts. So many, that the footage of one of the parts was around 26 minutes. You may notice that I am playing another instrument that I have never featured on this channel before. Yep, that is the Clarinet (and technically, also, the recorder)! I decided that I wanted to include those in this, since the OST for Genshin is orchestrated. Persona 3: Want to be Close (Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2021-01-03 | After being in isolation for most of 2020 (except for work and church), I think the name of this song probably sums up a lot of what we're feeling (just kidding, I had to put that out there)!I was in a local music store (socially distanced and I used hand sanitizer before messing around on the instruments) and I was fiddling around on a guitar until I started playing the chord changes for this song. Then I realized I might be on to what my next cover would be. So I went to one of the keyboards and found out (sort of) the chord changes that I would have to play to get thru while playing the melody on the piano. I wanted to avoid giving the melody to any of the saxes this time around since most of my covers had a saxophone or 2 on the melody. Now, it's funny that the song I thought of was out of Persona 3 considering a lot of the Persona music I arrange comes out of Persona 4 or Persona 4 Golden. Of course there were a few out of Persona 3 Portable that I did, but none from the original game. I guess here's my first! Snowflakes from Persona 4 (Sax & Piano Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2020-12-25 | Merry Christmas!This is the third of three videos that are winter-oriented that I wanted to do for this channel this year. I hope I can have the same motivation next year like I did this year. I figured with this one, I'd keep it simple and just keep it as sax and piano. Funnily enough, my motivation to record this, as well as the idea of keeping it simple came from The Consuls and the way that they played it over livestream on Twitch one December day. it was the bassist and the Pianist that were there that day and Snowflakes was a song I requested for them to play on their stream (btw, they have a library of their covers to request; Snowflakes was a song they covered previously). Funny how that works out lol.The piano part for this song was, surprising, not as agitating to record because All I really needed to do was keep doing the same chords over again and tempo gave me enough time to know where I needed to go next. I am not primarily a piano player, so sometimes it takes me a while to get that where I want it. One of the things I am working on is better embouchure and a way to reduce the "spitty" sound that my sound produces. I know this is awfully spread out from the one that I dropped on 12/1, unless I covered something entirely different between 12/1 and today.This track is actually one that I always imagined myself covering in some shape form or fashion when I was going through college between whenever this game dropped and 2016. However, I didn't have the equipment or the time to be able to do so. Then when I graduated college, I still didn't have the time to do it, but when 2018 came around, I forgot all about this track. I finally remembered that this was a track that I was always wanting to do when I looked back at the stuff that I was trying to arrange during my college career, including National Park (which I covered before or after the Heaven stage track, I can't remember lol). This is also a debut of the pTrumpet that I own, as well as the second appearance of the pBone.I was thinking of the Persona 3 and Persona 4 OSTs and I realized that this song was one of the easier ones that I can try to cover. I decided to also add a little twist for this one, but the problem was, if you didn't hear it, I have not played swing bass in so long, so I kinda fumbled around a bit much. I also thought it was a good idea to summon Saxologic, but that didn't work either (lol). But everything came out well, I think. I'm not a brass player, so the trombone lines took a bit to get right. And I felt bad for it because I was working on it, but I spent way too much time on it.So, with the exception of one cover (which may change soon, come to think of it), I have always titled my re-covers with the year that the cover drops on YouTube. Some may think, "but when did you first cover this song if you didn't do anything for 2019? You haven't been covering that many songs for too long." The answer to that: Winters was one of the first two songs I have covered when I started trying to post covers in 2018. Yep, 2018 was when this came out. Zinnias Theme from Pokémon Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby (Acoustic Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2020-10-25 | Yo!So while I was sitting over here having some sort of creator's block on some of the covers I was working on arranging, I stumbled upon a remix for Zinnia's theme. I can't remember whether it was VanilluxePavillion or Mewmore, but something they did made me remember that Zinnia's theme (and the battle music for this) was a thing and a very awesome thing. And I started working on this cover.Along the way, I did have a bit of a creator's block working on this, even, because I didn't know how to deal with instrumentation. So I decided to just keep it simple and make parts for guitar, bari uke, alto saxophone, and uke bass (written as bass guitar). I also added a shaker and a bass drum to get some percussion in there. I will say, that I do get happy when I finish a cover and am able to get it mixed and edited in such a short time after I arrange it (because my life/work schedule is crazy as it is), but this one got finished so quickly because the only parts I had to do multiple takes of was alto sax. There's also the fact that there aren't many instruments in this one like there normally are. There are three other songs that I am currently working on arranging a cover for, and I am far, far far, from being any close to done, so next cover may take a while. There will probably be a fourth that I'll try to do because December is coming around mighty quickly. Let's hope I don't take forever with these lol. Hold You in the Wind (Cover) from The Asterisk War (学戦都市アスタリスク) - Rasmus Faber | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2020-09-27 | So, I've wanted to cover another song from The Asterisk War soundtrack because what good would naming myself "AsteriskGamer" be if I didn't try to at least be able to use a couple of songs from The Asterisk War soundtrack in my repertoire. Not gonna lie, I chose this song because it was not a really long song and I felt it was an easy enough song to debut my new Tenor Sax, the Yamaha Allegro, and the pBone (plastic trombone). I also wanted to try using my Ibanez acoustic guitar once more because other than at home and doing these videos, I don't really use a lot of these instruments (other than the bass). I also used a shaker in this video (even though I didn't film the footage). It was a fun song to try to fix together, and it was, by far, one of the easiest songs to try to not take as long to get a video on the channel like I did with Heaven (due to factors that weren't in my control, but whatever lol).So, even if this was the easiest cover I have done on the channel for me, it doesn't mean that there weren't any difficulties while trying to record audio for this song. The Lead and Background tenor sax parts required some practice beforehand, so that piece is not what I'm talking about. I have learned a bit about playing chords on acoustic guitar, so that was not it either. Bass is a VERY EASY instrument for me to play (because it is almost the only instrument that I ever play outside of these covers), so not that one... It was actually the trombone parts that gave me the most trouble. I did have past experiences playing brass instruments, even took trumpet lessons in college. Since I am not an expert in brass instruments, I was having trouble controlling my embouchure and air flow, causing some notes to either overshoot or not hit the overtone I wanted to hit. It took me multiple takes to get the solo trombone part the way I needed it to go. Difficulty for that was always when I tried to play G (E-D-G___), it would either play E or overshoot to A. But I found out that slurring (I guess grace-noting is a more appropriate term) from the Gb/F# 3rd position to 2nd position G, though not ideal, helped me reach that. Enough about me, here's a fun fact about the composer for this song.Fun Fact: The composer of this song, Rasmus Faber, is a Swedish composer who is known to have worked on many soundtracks for Anime. He composed "Hold You in the Wind" as one of them, and from what I have researched (sort of skimmed thru last minute and found this, so I may or may not be accurate in this), worked with Maaya Sakamoto to create the first closing song for the Asterisk War anime, "Waiting for the Rain" (previously covered in 2019 on my channel). Well, I decided to go ahead and actually play it for myself (after going back at the arrangement and fixing it up for it to make as much sense that I can make it). There isn't much to this. It's just a linear piece that goes and repeats and ends. I guess that's what's called ABAB form (or whatever that's called).We'll see how long this re-arranging fever goes for.Also, you'll have to forgive me on the weird static sound that is happening throughout the song. This happens every time I play the sax. Persona 4: Your Affection, 2020 (Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2020-06-07 | "Oh hey, Asterisk is doing this thing again where he's covering songs he's already covered in the past. Why does he do this?!" Why, I'm so glad you asked. Let me point your attention below down the description.Your Affection is one of the early songs from the Persona 4 OST that I have covered in the first half of 2019. At that moment in time, I managed to finally pay off for a keyboard at one of the music stores in the city. I, also, got done covering a song from the Mario Kart: Super Circuit OST while debuting an alto saxophone I bought from online. Combine that with wanting to do more songs from the Persona 4 OST (yeah, I said "more"; even though the playlist for covers does not imply I have covered a P4 song before this one), I set out to record one of the songs in that game which stood out to me with the equipment that I currently have, of course, not in the original key lol.Fast-forward about a year and month later, and I was listening to some of my past covers and I realized that I was starting to drive myself crazy with the way some of these were EQ'd, mixed, or covered. Of course, the microphone I used then wasn't really built for studio recording. So I set out to grab my old "Your Affection" score, add an alto sax part to it, re-harmonize, and practice what Ro and Carlos (Ro Panuganti and insaneintherainmusic, respectively), taught me about mixing drums (I guess you can say I rearranged the cover for simpler terms) and record this song again. I feel this came out well and better than the first cover of this. If there was another song I would cover again (not anytime soon), it would probably be Heartbeat, heartbreak and Winters. I had the music written for only two tenor saxophones and I primarily had troubles with the harmony part I wrote out for the second Tenor Sax part. Now, I probably was able to get that under my fingers (after like two tries).Fukashigi no Karte was a song that I really liked the feel for as a anime's outro song. I feel it fit the animated piece of the closing. The reason I arranged this for a duo was I felt that it was easiest with all the weird chord changes going on in the verses. I didn't feel like wasting the time to analyze everything at the point that I was looking into this song. Welcome, and thank you for watching this video!I've been wanting to do this track from Three Houses' OST, even before I did the "As Fierce as Fire" track. And I imagined this being done in a simple 5-piece band with the drums being automated.While recording the guitar and bass parts, for this, the camera was having a difficult time. It was nighttime, and I have no light in the living room, so recording the rhythm section (with the exception of the keyboard and drums) was a bit of a pain. I used my bedroom and my laptop to record my sax. My bedroom is more of a closed space and has means of acoustically controlling the room (clothes in the closet, bed, etc.). Getting the sax part recorded on my laptop was a pain because my laptop is 6 years old and was purchased from Walmart, so Windows tend to do the most and maxes out my CPU from time to time, causing the DAW to slow down.The keyboard part I played is different from what I have originally written. I wrote the part to the point where an actual pianist could read and follow along, but when I was trying to play the part as written, I'd have to do A LOT of practicing to get that down. Instead, I just played the chords the way I knew how, despite how it would end up sounding. Of course, it sounded decent in the end, so I'm happy about it. As Fierce as Fire (Cover) from Fire Emblem: Three Houses | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2020-04-07 | So after playing through the story once, there were two songs on the Three Houses soundtrack that stood out to me. This one, "As Fierce as Fire," is one of them. After my first time listening to this song, I started thinking of ways to turn this into a cover that makes sense for me to cover without having to acquire the means of bowed string instruments. I think this came out pretty well, even with the fact that I do not play drums.There were a bit of complications while recording some of these parts that I had to rerecord a lot of these. One of these were on the Alesis clip. Sometimes I'll hit a pad, but another pad sounds, and that gets a bit frustrating. A Way of Life from Persona 3 Portable (Acoustic Cover) | AsteriskGamer AsteriskGamer 2020-03-19 | I decided to do another one from Persona 3 Portable. This time, it's "A Way of Life." This one's probably the last one I'll do from this game in particular (the Portable version).So I went and wrote a 3-piece acoustic version of this song. Part of me wanted to add bass and some drums, but I wanted to stay true to my original expectations for this song. I've been getting a bit of practice on the Alto Saxophone because I've done some sax work at the church the day before I recorded. It allowed for me to be a bit dynamic in playing the alto. Can't say the same for Tenor, as it tends to sound nasally. Funny thing, I got my swab cloth stuck in the neck of my Tenor Sax (of which I used in this video) and ended up having to take it to the shop for them to fix that and look at the rest of the horn. I ended up having to use a loaner, and it turns out that the loaner sounds a LOT better than the horn I have, in the case that the loaner does not sound nasally.
