“For my biggest fan and my best friend”
With successful radio singles including ‘Fireworks’, ‘Mala Leche’ and ‘Candy Crush’, Axelle has become a household name in the ever growing Belgian pop music scene. She was a nominee for Zomerhit 2022 and she’s been making quite a name for herself thanks to her bubbly personality, catchy songs and DIY-approach. Her stints with Ketnet, MNM, Maanrock and the many charts she’s taken over get even more impressive now that her new single ‘One Day’ gives us an inside glimpse of her personal life these last few months.
Early 2022 Axelle lost her biggest fan and best friend. Her dad passed away in February and her whole world came crashing down. ‘One Day’ shines a highly personal and fragile light on the events of 2022 and the song delivers a sound we haven’t yet heard from the otherwise cheerful singer. Axelle is in pain, and you can really hear it.
“At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to put out a song so private and frail. This is not just some made-up story, this is my life. I didn’t want to be vulnerable in a world that’s constantly shouting its opinions and where people’s feelings are sometimes so easily disregarded.
But when I played the song for my friends and family, I knew that this isn’t just my loss. We all lose and with a song like this I truly hope I can soothe others. It’s my first attempt at translating my sorrow into words and music. It was so painful to make this song, but I was compelled, I had to make it and release it.”
As an artist, Axelle once again shows signs of maturity. The sparse instrumental leaves space for a bone-chilling vocal performance. This time, there’s no room for musical ornaments or studio wizardry. There’s only honest lyrics and as a climax, a huge ‘wall of sound’ where Axelle conveys her inner despair with just a couple of breathtaking lines.
And yet, even in the saddest moments of her life, we can still subtly hear the optimism we’ve come to expect from Axelle: ‘One day, I’ll feel better. But just not today.’
Stunning!
