On this week's REWIND, AWS’s Principal Evangelist for Video Games, Chris Melissinos, sits down and digs into the first color portable from Sega, the Game Gear! Released in Japan in 1990 and the US in 1991, the Game Gear was Sega's answer to the mighty Nintendo GameBoy.
While not the first color handheld game console, which was the Atari Lynx, this is Sega's first attempt to move into the portable space and it is here that they were taking on Nintendo, in addition to the console space.
Built on the Sega Master System architecture, but with some significant improvements, the Game Gear boasted some truly impressive games for its time, many of which still hold up today!
So let's REWIND back to the early 1990's, grab a mountain of AA batteries (you'll need them!), and explore the first color handheld made by Sega!
